Sobriety date poll

Okay what do you see as the proper sobriety date for some one?

I am just wondering because I am presently using my first day without a drink as my sobriety date.

bugsworth 10-10-2007 06:30 AM

I agree with you...I use my first day without a drink. In reality it really is only one day off so IMO people should use whatever date they are comfortable with.

odaat 10-10-2007 06:30 AM

My sobriety date is my first day sober. I didn't drink the day before my sobriety date, but I was still 'out of it' so I don't count that day.

tiburon88 10-10-2007 06:41 AM

I count the day of my first AA meeting as my sobriety date. :)

bugsworth 10-10-2007 06:44 AM

tiburon, may I ask if you didn't drink for some time before attending aa?

Jfanagle 10-10-2007 07:43 AM

I have always used the date of my last drink. As always it is MY sobriety date, everyone else should use whatever makes sense to them. I choose to use this for a few reasons, but they all make sense to me.

I found that "that last drink date" reminds me HOW IT WAS, and for that reason I like that date. Every year as my "birthday" comes around I sit quietly and remember what it WAS like. I do find that with a few exceptions I don't think anyone pays attention to my sobriety date but me

GlassPrisoner 10-10-2007 07:52 AM

My last drink was 10/24/06, but my sobriety date is 10/25/06. So, I voted first day without a drink.

Rowan 10-10-2007 08:09 AM

While it makes more sense to choose the first day without a drink, where I am, new members are asked for their dry date/date of their last drink. That becomes their sobriety date. Hunh.

Astro 10-10-2007 08:12 AM

Mine is my first day without a drink, also the date of my first AA meeting, and I had 24 hours since my last drink.

But who's counting anyway? :c033:

Jfanagle 10-10-2007 08:26 AM

As the time sober gets longer the actual date matters less. Not just in concept, but in actual mathematics. If I am off by one day then I am in error by .000342%.

If I hadn't stopped drinking I would be off by about 90 proof, and 100%!!

Just another random thought.

Jon

LOL not that you know how long since your last drink!!!! LOL

Tib if I counted the date of my first AA meeting as my sobriety date I would be a huge liar, I would have about 5 years of your type of sobriety, I was drunk as a skunk at that meeting, it was my first and last meeting for quite a few years.

Tib if I used your method of counting sobriety from the time of my first AA meeting should I pick up a 5 year chip or be a bigger liar yet and pick up a 10 year chip? A lie is a lie so why not make it a whopper!!!!:c015:

mike_mass 10-10-2007 10:11 AM

My first day sober, of course. Why the heck would I want to commemorate my last drinking day?

bugsworth 10-10-2007 10:12 AM

I must be missing something here...

What does "Your type of sobriety mean"?

I hate being confused!! lol

dave47 10-10-2007 10:32 AM

Definitely has to be the first sober day.

DKS 10-10-2007 06:14 PM

I use my first day without a drink.

BP44 10-10-2007 06:28 PM

My last drink was on 2/6/05. But I didn't crawl back into AA until late March of this year. I reset my sobriety date to 3/26/07. I had to be done with the dry drunk.

Carol87 10-10-2007 06:58 PM

I voted for the day after your last drink; however, when I got sober 20 years ago, I chose the last day I drank. I'm not sure it makes that much difference if we maintain CONTINUOUS sobriety ... Just my opinion ... Good poll ...

tiburon88 10-10-2007 07:26 PM

Taz, if "my sobriety" helps me why criticize? I only have to be honest with myself. I have 5 years of recovery and can look in the mirror and be proud. "My sobriety" is obviously something you have a problem with, o well...

Pinkcuda 10-10-2007 08:38 PM

I have wondered the same thing, but not down to the day. It has more to do with the month. For example, if I was to quit the 15th of the September I wouldn't get my 30 day chip the last meeting of that month(whenever B-Day night is) since I had only 2 weeks sobriety. The following September I would get a 1 year chip at the end of the month even though I only had 11 months and 2 weeks.
It's no wonder we drank having to deal with this kind of stuff.

Pinkcuda 10-10-2007 08:43 PM

Also, If you got drunk and went to bed at 10:00 you were probably still drunk after midnight. Now you have to use the next day. A full 26 hours after your last drink.
