Here's a thing -- in the ancient western world, the day was defined strictly as 12 hours of daylight, and the night as 12 hours of darkness. Now we all know that in some seasons it's dark a longer time than in others. Solution: Sometimes an hour lasted a little time, and sometimes long. "The hours stretched on 'til dawn" takes new meaning.
