I've tapered successfully any number of times - very quickly. I always did it on one day and it was torturous. Exactly half my "normal" ration on that day. As others have said, my perspective was that the alcohol is to be used very sparingly just to stave off the worst symptoms.
Had I tried to taper over several days, I think I would have failed. Feeling better plus looking forward to my daily ration would have only fed my addiction.
I've also done medical detox. Hands down it's the better way to go.
Either which way, it's the Staying Stopped that's been the real issue for me. In my humble opinion, that's the prize every one of us should keep our eyes on.
