Regarding the good drinking memories from years gone by. I think it's pretty common. But a guy at an AA meeting explained it this way.
Alcohol and time:
The early years - Alcohol = fun
The middle years - Alcohol = fun + consequences
The later years - Alcohol = consequences
We can't turn back the clock.
