I’m successful and have alway advanced in my career, even in my late 20s while drinking 1-2 handles of rum a week. Granted, in my youth I really only had two priorities:

Work and drinking.

Also I didn’t decide to quit for good at “rock bottom,” but years of “successful” moderation with only the occasional “rough weekend.” (Putting my AV language in quotes).

As you said, alcoholics come in all shapes, as diverse a group as any. The only thing we really share in common? We should never drink.
