This may sound ridiculous but . . . . . pretend that he has been sent to a desert island for work. There is no one else around, he is isolated. There is no trouble that he can get into. There are no phones, no email. He will be there for ten days just like you will be gone 10 days on a much needed vacation. You are free to spend those days not giving any thought whatsoever to what is going on with him. You are so relaxed and enjoying the company of your family. Send him anywhere you want in your mind - then leave him there for the duration of your trip.
I think I would ask him not to call you if he has been drinking. If he does screw up what can you do about it while laying on the beach? Absolutely nothing. Decide what you need to have a great vacation. If that means shutting him out of your mind, then do it. That sick feeling you get in the pit of your stomach does not have to go with you. Take a box, open the lid, put those feelings in that box, close the lid and put it in a drawer before you go. Give it a try - it can't hurt.
Now go and have a wonderful time.
