I wonder if kids know what it does to our guts when they smile like you're a hero! It's so visceral, like when the Grinch's heart grows! I felt like a phony at first when a kid would smile at me like that, but with more sober time and becoming more reliable, I learned that I earned those smiles and joy and love.
