Shorty is seen as an old school mobster with sort of 'honor' in Mexico. He had a reputation of not messing with innocent people not in rival narco cartels, he built schools, etc. If you want to see some of the stuff the new upstarts are doing go to borderlandbeat and scroll through some of the older stories about Zetas, CJNG, Templarios, and Golfos. Some of the stuff would make ISIS baddies cringe.
I sincerely hope the violence in Mexico settles down. The honest regular people do not deserve this. The people are fed up to the point of almost taking up arms against their own government last year.
Sorry... The whole narco thing in the Mexico / US is both a fascination and a pet peeve of mine.
