This is not a glamorous duck, but it has some distinctive features. It’s the only member of its genus, truly sui generis, a lone shoot on the evolutionary tree, or a one-off for creation. And in its native lakes of eastern and southern Africa and Madagascar, it lives mostly off water lily bulbs.


Thalassornis leuconotus, the white-backed duck, a lucky duck, with such a spiritual diet. Here’s the newest waterlily variety discovered in nature, Nymphaea minuta, a tiny waterlily from Madagascar in 2006 -- & food for the white-backed duck.
