This is not a glamorous duck, but it has some distinctive features. It’s the only member of its genus, truly
sui generis,
a lone shoot on the evolutionary tree, or a one-off for creation. And in its native lakes of eastern and southern Africa and Madagascar, it lives mostly off water lily bulbs.
