Flex those
sober muscles, too! I remember how odd and awkward it felt in the beginning to not drink. Drinking was what I did. What I had always done. It was my response to any life event.
Happy? Celebrate with a drink.
Sad? Soothe with a drink.
Angry? Calm with a drink.
Accomplish something? Reward with a drink.
Finding new ways to celebrate, soothe, calm, and reward seemed unnatural in early sobriety. Breaking old patterns and establishing new ones takes time and effort. But when you've done it you've also got happy muscles to flex.
