This gave me shivers! I am sorry that you and your daughter were in such danger. I can imagine that your daughter is going through some PTSD from this event. Maybe you should suggest some counseling in the mean time. I would not go back, and poke the bear just to see if it was a false alarm!!! May I also mention reading up on Stockholm Syndrome.
