I hear the phrase "when I began drinking alcoholically" a lot in the rooms. I never know what to think of it. You described how you became less a "functional" drinker as time went on. That's what happened to me. This is a progressive illness. I might keep a job or a family together for a while, but my health and my faith deteriorate despite what I considered to be functionality. The thing to do that worked for me is to recognize it immediately...kind of like a First Step. I took action before what little "functionality" I had went away like everything and everyone else.
