Moderation?

Many people after being clean and sober for awhile start to doubt whether they have
a problem anymore. I was one of them.

It seems as alcoholics that we have a short term memory when it comes to recalling
the consequences that brought us to SR to begin with.

We get sober, start feeling good and get further away from all those bad feelings. Life
starts to get a little better and then the insanity of wanting to take that first drink enters
our minds once again.

We think to ourselves maybe I don't have a problem after all. Maybe it was all in my head.

Maybe I wasn't that bad after all.

From what I have now learned about alcoholism it will be different now .

I'll just have one, maybe two.

Why do we do it? Cuz we are crazy lol. That kind of thinking is actually all a part of
what I call the illness of addiction. This illness centers in our minds, our thinking.

Why would we return to something that made us want to stop in the first place. If
we felt the need to stop there must have been some major problems that led us to
that decision.

But we just can't seem to remember what they are when all the sudden we want to
try moderation again. Many decide to go try moderation again and never
make it back.

Many face such dire consequences including DUI's, jail, violence, liver disease, broken
families and even death..

For most every self confirmed alcoholic I have ever known including myself who has
relapsed, it works for a couple weeks, maybe even a month.

But eventually the one or two drinks isn't enough. And we always end up on that
bender, waking up wondering how did this happen again?

I know I didn't drink for the taste. I drank to get drunk. I could never be happy trying to
moderate , in fact I would be miserable. And when we start out moderating we almost
always end up right back where we started.

That fact that we are trying to moderate already confirms we must be out of control.
Moderate drinkers don't think about how many drinks they can have. They just know and
stop at one or two.

It's a risky experiment and one I am not willing to take on . Have you forgotten why
you quit in the first place?

Do you think you can moderate?

People who do not have a problem with alcohol do not question whether they do, they
just know they don't.

If you are questioning whether you are an alcoholic then you are obviously not a
moderate drinker.

If you are wondering if you can moderate then you are trying to control something that
is already out of control.

Think it through carefully. If it was getting any easier out there we wouldn't see so
many people returning to SR and the 24 club daily.
