I, too, tried getting sober for many years, but it never stuck. Heck I joined here six years ago (under a different user name) and have been sober two and a half years.
A plan is a good idea. Have you considered AA or such support groups?
It took me more than myself to quit.
What helps me is thinking of that first drink and where it'll lead me.I don't wnat any more day ones. It took a power greater than myself to quit.
Whichever path you take, it is so worth it, and I wish you success.
Did you try AA back then too? Or is that what you do now and it works for you? I've gone to AA many times and have had several sponsors but it doesn't seem to work for me.
