When I first entered recovery I was always told that you do the first three steps on your own. Until I came onto this site, I had never heard of a sponsor working with a sponsee that early on.
Given that, I think it is very hard to work with the Big Book alone for many people. I know people have done it, but some people (like me) need more help and interaction and guidance.
