When my wife quit smoking she picked a date, 11/1/2001 and stuck with it. In support, I put my pipe and cigars away and neither of us has smoked since.
Unfortunately she has an alcohol problem and has found that is much harder to quit. This is a really tough thing that you are going to do for yourself, but keep in mind you wil also be doing it for the people around you who care what happens to you.
