I quit drinking after a steady daily of 4-7 drinks, sometimes more, rarely less. It wasn't too bad, and if you need or want Dr.'s advice, take it. Many insurance companies offer a nurse's line too that might help.
The first few days of sobriety I read a lot of addiction memoirs and read a ton of SR posts. It really helped ease my fears and shore up the courage that I could do this. Seven months sober now, and I love it. Doesn't make everyday rosy, but it doesn't make it worse. I lost 20 lbs too, btw, just from cutting out the alcohol. Watch the sugar cravings though, they were crazy for me at first. I indulged a little , but find too much sugar makes me feel impulsive. Good luck, you are wonderful and brave to be here!
