You are so right. Being abstinent cannot be about anything else other than not drinking alcohol. Unfortunately years of drinking and/or drugging left many years worth of insecurities and scars that will take time and a lot of work to heal.
To think abstaining will make this process any easier is not true. It just enables it to start happening. We spent years running away from our problems because it was easier.
Being sober really takes no "work". Changing our lives takes action and work, one step at a time buddy.
