Speaking only for myself, the reason I _started_ drinking was pretty close to what is mentioned in that article. However, the reason I _continued_ to drink is because I _loved_ how it made me feel. Even though I had seen most of the adults in my family destroy their lives thru drinking.
The reason I quit drinking is because as a child I saw a handful of adults have healthy, productive lives. None of them every tried to "save" me, or change me. They were just wonderful examples of a life lived well. They showed me that it was _possible_ to have a good life. When the opportunity came for me to sober up it was those examples that gave me hope.
