My experience is that when I tried quitting drinking without a program I felt insane. My head just spun and I could not stand being in my own skin. Although a program did not fix all of that at once it did help make it better. I still had to address my mental health issues with a mental health provider but there were many aspects of my mental health that the program of AA addressed. It helped relieve me of my head spinning which felt like hamsters running on a treadmill as it seemed to go nowhere. It also helped with the feeling of not being able to stand being in my own skin. I have been sober through the program for over 10 years now and feel that starting the program of AA is one of the best choices I have made in my life. It is not a cure all though. I had to address my mental health issues; PTSD, Bipolar, Chronic Anxiety, etc... with a mental health provider.

I don't know if my experience helps any but hope you can find something in it that does. Take care.
