Yes, as insane as it sounds, alcoholics drink despite all the harmful effects to self and family. To quote the Big Book of A.A.
"The idea that somehow, someday he will control and enjoy his drinking is the great obsession of every abnormal drinker. The persistence of this illusion is astonishing.
Many pursue it into the gates of insanity or death." [emphasis mine].
What can I tell you? Alcohol is insidious. But drinking is just the symptom.
