This is very true. Just yesterday I had a stressful hour or so (I have small kids and it can be very intense at times) and I wound up going in to my husband and going "See? NOW I want a beer or a Valium" . When I very rarely crave anything anymore. Normal stress doesn't make me 'go there' (emotionally) anymore. But I was aware of it and instead of seething I apologized to my son for being snappy, asked him to go play for a bit so I could finish my work and planned to take both kids out for a brownie when I was done.

I used to have to do that a lot. Like deliberately plan something emotionally healthy to make myself feel better. Multiple times a day. Mostly now it's automatic. But yesterday it felt good to make the right decision.
