I grew up in Cali -
Lulu - San Diego or Venice Beach - Both got nice hotels.
San Diego is just great all the way around. Sea World's there, easy drive to Disneyland.
Venice Beach, also a classic place. Close to Hollywood, Universal Studios, Zuma, Malibu Pacific Coast Hwy right there. Beverly Hills etc..
Personally, I'd pick Venice.
