That quote is a misrepresentation of atheism. Atheism rejects the idea of the existence of
deities. Regardless of this rejection, many atheists still believe
life is meaningful; its meaningfulness is simply not attributed to deities or the supernatural. It's more subjective and personal.
The originally quoted text more accurately defines
nihilism, which is a philosophical idea made popular by Nietzsche, but the idea of it was introduced in the early 19th century.
