Your doctor won't get in trouble, but if you don't want to go to him, you may want to check out an addictionologist - they specialize in addiction. Other than that, you may just want to get another GP to get checked out, make sure you are healthy before you embark on a cold-turkey.
BTW, I used AA instead of NA when I was going to meetings, even though alcohol wasn't an issue for me. I just felt more comfortable there, than in NA, but that was me.
