Absolutely, that is the first step for making sure you are physically sound and if you may need medical help in detoxing. One thing that is VERY important when seeing your GP, that is HONESTY!!!!! You are wasting your time and your GP's time if you do not tell him the WHOLE truth about your drinking.

I use AA to stay sober, but it is not the only program out there, if you are an alcoholic I can tell you that very few people manage to stay sober unless they are working some sort of recovery program daily, there is a list of different recovery programs on this site, try some of those out.... I can tell you from experience that working a program half way usually does not lead to good results, if you decide to work a program of recovery whether it is AA, SMART, or what ever.... WORK IT fully and keep on working it.
