Personally I don't think it would have made much difference. I enjoyed drinking, it gave me a buzz and thus I drank. I become obsessed with things, like running, computer games, chess, history - it's the way I'm wired. Unfortunately I became obsessed with drinking as well.
Yea I guess that can be a factor as well, but I already hold the traits of a over addictive personality, just wish it can be directed into all possitives, but you know what they say about everything (Moderation) that's not inviting your own Demons....
