I can imagine how hard it must be, when you believe that it is the right thing and the right time to adopt, and then it turns out so badly. I've been in situations where I truly believed I was following my soul's path, and then it falls apart. And, I end up questioning the deepest parts of myself and searching for answers.
I'm glad that you are beginning to find some peace.
