If he is taking knives and cutting himself, that is called self-mutilation. Look it up on the internet and see if it fits his situation. Might give you another angle on what is happening with him. It sounds like he really needs to be somewhere that he can get professional help. You are not equipped to deal with his issues no matter how much you love him, care about him and feel sorry for him.
