Smile RE: CHANGE - People, Places & Things

Hi, Im Sharon and I'm an Alcoholic. From the very beginning when I got sober, I was in rehab. 28 days in a controlled inviroment. There have been folks that have gotten sober on their own and those like me which needed help. I use to think I could stop drinking on my own and failed so many times. Some of the things I learned when i got sober was that I needed to change things. Change, people, places and things that would be associated with alcohol. My friends I use to hang out with...These were people in bars. Where all the fun was at. So that killed off 2 birds with one stone. Bars and friends needed to be changed. Out of my life. As for things....social gatherings, holidays, get togethers with friends that drank, special occasisions....weddings, birthday parties, bar-b-ques, football games, etc. Special kinds of glasses Id drink from. A drink and a tv show. Just to relax. They would tell me, if I had to be at one of these get togethers, then prepare yourself. Have a plan. Drive urself there, so if you become uncomfortable around all the drinking then you have a way to escape. I already knew i was gonna be uncomfortable because here I am sober and those drinking will act like I did when i was drinking. Loud and possibly abnoxious. Once I got sober, in order to be myself, I had to be around those that were sober like I. Hanging out at a Super Bowl Party is something I've not experienced, but Im sure they are fun. Good clean, silly fun. Why feel uncomfortable at a gathering when you are sober and everyone else is drinking. I know that would make me feel so uncomfortable. I just don't put myself in situation like that that would make me feel that way. Would you?
Change can be good in sobriety.

Thanks for letting me share.

AA friend,
Sharon M.

Smile NEEDS and WANTS

Thanks GIMNAR.

I think that is true about the needs and wants in our lives. I don't always agree with the choices I have to make in my life, but I can certainly say I want and need to stay sober today. Thanks buddy. Sharon
