Every man loves what he is good at.
Thomas Shadwell.
Some people are very clear about what they are good at. They use their skills and talents well, and they find joy in doing this. Many of us aren’t so lucky. We need to find our special gift.
In our first years of recovery, we learn how to look closely at ourselves, our behaviors, and what we want to fix. We also ask other people to tell us how they see us. This helps with our healing.
These same skills will help us find lifelong growth and our special talents. To find out what these talents are, we need to look at two main things. First, we pay attention to what makes us feel happy. Second, we ask other people for feedback on what we do well. We then need to sort through these answers.
Somewhere in there, we will find our special gift, the one that makes us happy when we use it.
