I'll chime in here with something that isn't talked about too much:
I drank because that's what all my friends were doing. I drank to fit in. I think a lot of people overlook the "peer pressure" component of drinking/drug abuse. It certainly is real, and was a HUGE contributor to why I drank. Once I moved away from all my old drinking buddies, staying sober became a whole lot easier. And for the record, I'll have 10 months off drugs and alcohol on the 25th. I don't know if that's "long-term" but it's certainly the longest term I've had, since I was 13 years old. Hope that helps.

To add further: Another reason why I drank (and used drugs) was because I suffer from severe anxiety/anger issues. (A lot of which I think is a result of stuff that happened to me when I was a little boy.) I didn't know how to deal with those things, so I used alcohol to cope. Thankfully, I don't need to use alcohol or drugs to cope with these issues.
