philosophical question: what is a recovery "program"

Why do they call it a "program"? Aren't programs what computer people write and then machines just mindlessly follow? Can we program ourselves? Are programs to be consciously followed or mindlessly consumed, as if we are machines?

What is a "program"?

program - definition of program by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.

Well, my idea of a program is a set of guideline a person (or thing) can follow to better plan out a future outcome. So, a recovery program would be loosely or strictly following either the 12 steps or another similar program and eventually learning more about yourself and becoming comfortable in sobriety. You can never completely recover from being an alcoholic- at least not from my experience. but you can take steps to be satisfied with sobriety! hope this helps

IMNSHO Spiritual based recovery is a process. It has start, middle and final phases just as a computer program does. It also has instructions, rules, and branch points just as an algorithm does. Just like a computer program, it requires many iterations to get results. Progress is made with action rather than by time spent idling.

The rudimentary algorithm is simple:

1. Struggle (with some obstacle)
2. Surrender (the results)
3. Repeat (with a new obstacle)
