Pretty much every song on Metallica's St Anger. It came out right as I quit drinking and most of the lyrics stem from James Hetfield's own experience with getting sober. I don't mean to sound dramatic, but this disc literally kept me sober.

I love Dustin Kensrue's cover of this song. (even though it makes me cry)

Blood and Wine

I've been with Sally
I've been with Sue
I've been with Cindy and her sister too.
Now I'm tryin' to settle down,
Start a familyl wiith that cute little Kim.
But now that I've tasted blood,
Now this wine tastes too thin

I've got a needle, don't be alarmed.
It shoots streams of lovely things into my arm.
Well I'd sell my own mother for some sweet heroin.
Oh, now that I've tasted blood,
Now this wine seems too thin

Sometimes the white coats; They hide black hearts.
We learn to sugar coat the same black guards.
If you headline the gold
I'll cure richness sin.
Oh, now that I've tasted blood,
Now this wine seems too thin

Oh, well I walked in the bank
And I pulled out my gun.
You should've seen those people scream and run.
I used to make an honest buck;
How can I go back to that again?
Oh, now that I've tasted blood,
Now this wine seems too thin.

Boy, Old Farts Don't Get Any Respect . . .

Well, I see Johnny Cash was mentioned, but the best two he did were written by others . . .

Kristofferson wrote "Sunday Morning Coming Down" . . .

Well I woke up Sunday morning,
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,
So I had one more for dessert.
* * * * **
'Cos there's something in a Sunday,
Makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothin' short of dyin',
Half as lonesome as the sound,
On the sleepin' city sidewalks:
Sunday mornin' comin' down.

And that ode to the ol' low bottom cowboy, "Ghost Riders in the Sky" . . . Written by Stan Jones in 1948...

http://www.homestead.com/deenotes/ghost.html

The riders rode on by him, and he heard one call his name
"If you want to save your soul from hell a ridin' on our range
Then cowboy change your ways today or with us you will ride,
A-trying to catch the devil's herd across these endless skies."
Yippee yi yay, yippee yi yo. the ghost riders in the sky.

I've got a secret version of that one in my "Dry Drunk First Aid Kit."

And finally, let us not forget Brother Brian . . . Wilson, that is, same last name as Bill, and the Beach Boys' "The Sloop John B." Never been seasick, but this one brings back memories . . .

The first mate he got drunk
And broke in the capn's trunk
The constable had to come and take him away
Sheriff john stone
Why dont you leave me alone, yeah yeah
Well I feel so broke up I wanna go home

I always wonder if John B stood for John Barleycorn . . .

I LOVE IT!!! hope you do to!

Seal - Love's Devine

there the rain storm came over me
and I felt my spirit break
I had lost
all of my
belief you see
and realised my mistake
but time
threw a prayer to me
and all around me became still

(chorus)
i need love
love's devine
please forgive me now I see that I've been blind
give me love
love is what I need to help me know my name

through the rain storm came sanctury
and I felt my spirit fly
I have found
all of my
reality
and realised what it takes

(chorus)
'cause i need love
love's devine
please forgive me now I see that I've been blind
give me love
love is what I need to help me know my name

oh
I dont bed
dont pray
show me how to live it
promise me you wont forsake
'cause love can help me know my name

well I tried to say there's nothing wrong
but inside I felt me lying all along
what the message here was plain to see
believe me

(chorus)
'cause i need love
love's devine
please forgive me now I see that I've been blind
give me love
love is what I need to help me know my name

oh
I dont bed
dont pray
show me how to live it
promise me you wont forsake
'cause love can help me know my name
love can help me know my name

Thanks!!

Go buy Mad Caddies Just One More. There's a few songs on there that I've been listening to over and over. They're the only band that I have ever felt got it.

Examples:
Last Breath:

Still awake on a winters day
skies are gray and it's cold
Smoke signals from my last cigarette
Lets me know that it's finally getting old
Everybody hates me for the night before
The man you saw wasn't me
And now there's blood upon the bathroom floor
I've got a disease

Wait a while all I need is a friend
Come on stay a while won't you please understand

I'm ****** up with nothing ahead by the end
I know that I'll never get sober
And I'm fed up with this miserable life after death
I know that I've taken my last breath

Memories of how it used to be
Painted thick on my walls
Cold illusions pumping through my veins
Felt them there but I didn't hear them call
Washed away all my darkest fears
Shoved them down to my soul
I keep them aged llike a vintage wine
I'm sure they'll come out when they're ready to go

Drinking For 11:

Drinking for eleven, that's just what i do,
When i'm not with you,
My heart goes to bed

End of the bar, that's just where i'll be,
Don't try and come find me
Cause i'm already dead

With one eye tied upon the open road
I feel your presence and i can't let it go
It moves so slowly as it creeps into my mind,
Steals every breath i hav and leaves my heart behind

Wanna know what you're feeling if your feeling alone
I wanna hear if you still care
The last time i remember you was the last time i wasn't scared

When the nights start fading and the mornin' arrives
I wanna still feel you around
Will you creep into my head again and pick me up off the ground
Once more and tell mewhat you're fighting for

Gotta try gotta try for tomorrow
When you can't see through to day
There's nowhere left to stay

Sometimes i feel like im out here all alone
Just one in million stuck with no place left to go

The fear steps up to me with every move that i make
Following close behind my soul it wants to take

Day by Day:

My situation brings me down
Boredom wraps it's arms around me
My inhibitions were thrown out the door so long ago
Now I sit here and I can't breathe

I feel I'm going nowhere fast
I ask myself how long this is gonna last

So I go day by day
And it feels the same way
Laugh at all the jokes I've heard before
On and on I turn the same page
Drunk and lying passed out the floor
What for

These complications have been here for so long
I don't think they're ever gonna leave
Tired of dealing with motivation
Stagnant as the water that I'm gonna drown my head in
Soon you'll see

The reason the season
Locked up inside I'm screaming
I'm trying defying everything that wasn't right
To get ou of here

Dropkick Murphys are named after a detox.
Curse of a Fallen Soul, Barroom Hero, Road of the Righteous Tattoos and Scally Caps... all about sobriety.
Social Distortion has tlots of songs in this vein that I've posted before
Ball and Chain, Story of My Life, When the Angels Sing, Crown of Thorns, Sick Boy... all good stuff.

I surrender

Written By:
L. Biancaniello, S. Watters

Lyrics:
There's so much life
I've left to live
And this fire's burning still
When I watch you look at me
I think I could find the will
To stand for every dream
And forsake this solid ground
And give up this fear within
Of what would happen if they end, you
I'm in love with you

'Cause I'd surrender everything
To feel the chance, to live again
I reach to you
I know you can feel it too
We'd make it through

A thousand dreams I still believe
I'd make you give them all to me
I'd hold you in my arms and never let go
I surrender

I know
I can't survive another night away from you
You're the reason I go on
And now I need to live the truth

Right now, there's no better time
From this fear, I will break free
And I'll live again with love
And know they can't take that away from me
And they will see... yeah

(I'd surrender everything)
To feel the chance, to live again
I reach to you
I know you can feel it too
We'd make it through

A thousand dreams I still believe
I'll make you give them all to me
I'll hold you in my arms and never let go
I surrender

Every night gets longer
And this voice's getting stronger baby
I'll swallow my pride
And I'll be alive
Can't you hear my call?
I surrender all...

(I'll surrender everything)
(To feel the chance, to live again)
I reach to you
I know you can feel it too
We'll make it through

A thousand dreams I still believe
I'll make you give them all to me
I'll hold you in my arms and never let go
I surrender

Right here, right now
I'd give my life to live again
I'll break free
Take me, my everything

I surrender all to you
(Right now)
Right now
(I'd give my life to live again)
I'd give my life
(I'll break free, Take me)
Take me, take me
(my everything)
My everything

(I surrender all to you, right now)
Right now
(I'd give my life to live again)
I'd give my life to you baby
I'll break free, yeah free

What about Jesus Rodreguiz,"Sugar Man", I'm probably showing my age here.

Sugar man won't you hurry

'cause i'm tired of these scenes

for a blue coin

won't you bring back

all the colours to my dreams

Weak and Powerless ~A perfect Circle

Tilling my own grave to keep me level
Jam another dragon down the hole
Digging to the rhythm and the echo of a solitary siren
One that pushes me along and leaves me so

Desperate and Ravenous
I'm so weak and powerless over you

Someone feed the monkey while I dig in search of China
White as Dracula as I approach the bottom

Desperate and Ravenous
I'm so weak and powerless over you

Pale angel go away
Come again some other day
The devil has my ear today
I'll never hear of what you say
Promised I would find a little solace
And some piece of mind
Whatever just as long as I don't feel so

Desperate and Ravenous
I'm so weak and powerless over you
Desperate and Ravenous
I'm so weak and powerless
over you

The Noose ~A Perfect Circle

So glad to see you well
Overcome and completely silent now
Without himself
You cast your demons out
And not to pull your halo down
Around your neck and tug you off your cloud
But I'm more than just curious
How you're planning to go about
Making your amends to the dead
To the dead

Recall the deeds as if
They're all someone else's
Atrocious stories
Now you stand reborn before us all
So glad to see you well

And not to pull your halo down
Around your neck and tug you to the ground
But I'm more than just curious
How you're planning to go about
Making your amends to the dead
To the dead

With your halo slipping down
Your halo slipping
Your halo slipping down
Your halo slipping down
Your halo slipping down [repeated]

Your halo slipping down to choke you now

This is a good one about recovery. Seems strange coming from Ozzy.

DREAMER
By: Ozzy Osbourne

Gazing through the window at the world outside,
wondering will mother earth survive hoping that mankind will stop abusing her sometime?
After all there痴 only just the two of us and here we are still fighting for our lives
watching all of history repeat itself time after time.

I知 just a dreamer, I dream my life away
I知 just a dreamer, who dreams of better days

I watch the sun go down like every one of us,
I知 hoping that the dawn will bring a sign,
a better place for those who will come after us, this time.

I知 just a dreamer, I dream my life away
I知 just a dreamer, who dreams of better days.

You池e higher power maybe God of Jesus Christ,
it doesn稚 really matter much to me,
without each others help there aint no hope for us,
I知 living in a dream of fantasies,
oh yeah yeah yeah.

If only we could all just find serenity,
it would be nice if we could live as one,
when will all this anger, hate and bigotry, be gone.

I知 just a dreamer, I dream my life away, today
I知 just a dreamer, who dreams of better days.
oh yeah I知 just a dreamer,
who痴 searching for the way,
today I知 just a dreamer,
dreaming my life away,
oh yeah, yeah yeah!

This is the lyrics to "Hand of Doom"
Black Sabbath.

Whatcha gonna do?
Times caught up with you
Now you wait your turn
You know theres no return

Take your written rules
You join the other fools
Turn to something new
Now its killing you

First it was the bomb
Vietnam napalm
Disillusioning
You push the needle in

From life you escape
Realitys that way
Colours in your mind
Satisfy your time

Oh you, you know you must be blind
To do something like this
To take the sleep that you dont know
Youre giving death a kiss, oh, little fool now

Your mind is full of pleasure
Your bodys looking ill
To you its shallow leisure
So drop the acid pill,

Dont stop to think now

Youre having a good time baby
But that wont last
Your minds all full of things
Youre living too fast

Go out enjoy yourself
Dont bottle it in
You need someone to help you
To stick the needle in, yeah

Now you know the scene
Your skin starts turning green
Your eyes no longer seeing
Lifes reality

Push the needle in,
Face deaths sickly grin
Holes are in your skin,
Caused by deadly pin

Head starts spinning round
You fall down to the ground
Feel your body heave
Deaths hands starts to weave

Its too late to turn
You dont want to learn
Price of life you cry
Now youre gonna die!

Here is another one. "Let her cry" by Hootie and the Blowfish.

She sits alone by a lamppost
Tryin' to find a thought that's escaped her mind
She says there's the one I love the most
but strifes not far behind
She never lets me in

Only tells me where she's been
When she's had too much to drink
I say that I don't care
I just run my hands throuh her dark hair then I
Pray to god you gotta help me fly away

And just let her cry
If the tears fall down like rain
Let her sing
If it eases all her pain
Let her go
Let her walk right out on me
And if the sun comes up tomorrow
Let her be
Let her be

[solo]

This morning I woke up alone
Found a note standin' by the phone
Sayin' baby maybe I'll be back some day
I wanted to look for you
You walked in I didn't know just what I should do so I
Sat back down, had a beer, and felt sorry for myself

Sayin' let her cry
If the tears fall down like rain
Let her sing
If it eases all her pain
Let her go
Let her walk right out on me
And if the sun comes up tomorrow
Let her be
Let her be

[solo]

Last night I tried to leave
Cried so much I could not believe
She was the same girl I fell in love with long ago
She went in the back to get high
I sat down on my couch and cried
Whoah, my love, please help me won't you hold my hand

Let her cry
If the tears fall down like rain
Let her sing
If it eases all her pain
Let her go
Let her walk right out on me
And if the sun comes up tomorrow
Let her be
Oh, oh, oh
