I've recently discovered the band Dream Theater. The drummer and primary lyricist, Mike Portnoy, is putting his current 12-step recovery onto "vinyl" (yes that phrase effectively dates me) over the course of several albums.

He started out with a multi-part suite on their 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence CD called "The Glass Prison", which contains steps 1-3, and is dedicated to Bill W.

"This Dying Soul" from their Train of Thought CD contains steps 4 and 5.

Their current release, Octavarium, contains steps 6 and 7 in the track "The Root of All Evil".

First of all, Dream Theater is the most amazing "Progressive" band I've ever heard. Their musicianship and technical brilliance is simply ASTONISHING. That being said, there is much that will probably go over the head of the casual listener (as is typical with most "Progressive" music).

Additionally, Mike's lyrics tend to be extremely gut-wrenching self-analysis' of his inner world, and it is easy to see yourself in them while studying them. Since he's only up to Step 7, we'll have to wait for the next few DT releases for the conclusion.

A sample from "The Root of All Evil", pt VI (Ready):

Proud enough for you to call me arrogant
Greedy enough to be labeled a thief
Angry enough for me to go and hurt a man
Cruel enough for me to feel no grief

Never could have just a part of it
I always need more to get by
Getting right down to the heart of it
The root of all evil has been running my whole life

Dirty enough for me to lust
Leaving nothing left to trust
Jealous enough to still feel envious
Lazy enough to sleep all day
And let my life just waste away
Selfish enough to make you wait for me

Driven blindly by our sins
Misled so easily
Entirely ready to leave it behind
I'm begging to break free

Take all of me
The desires that keep burning deep inside
Cast them all away
And help to give me strength to face another day
I am ready
Help me be what I can be

LIke I said, pretty heavy stuff. Add to that the music behind them is driving, intense and complex, and you've got for one interesting stew of complex emotions while listening. Since the theme is about admitting your sins and being ready to change, I tend to view this as a positive listening experience. (Even though it sounds at times like some pretty bleak stuff).

Anyway, thought I'd share this with everyone.

Peace!

Lean On Me

Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow

Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on

Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you don't let show

Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on

If there is a load you have to bear
That you can't carry
I'm right up the road
I'll share your load
If you just call me

So just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'd understand
We all need somebody to lean on

Lean on me when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
Till I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on

Counting Crows - Perfect Blue Buildings

Counting Crows - Perfect Blue Buildings

Just down the street from your hotel, baby
I stay at home with my disease
And ain’t this position familiar, darling
Well, all monkeys do what they see
Help me stay awake, I’m falling...

Down on virginia and la loma
Where I got friends who’ll care for me
You got an attitude of everything I ever wanted
I got an attitude of need
Help me stay awake, I’m falling...

Asleep in perfect blue buildings
Beside the green apple sea
Gonna get me a little oblivion, baby
Try to keep myself away from me

It’s 4:30 a.m. on a tuesday
It doesn’t get much worse than this
In beds in little rooms in buildings in the middle of these lives which are completely meaningless
Help me stay awake, I’m falling...

Asleep in perfect blue buildings
Beside the green apple sea
Gonna get me a little oblivion, baby
Try to keep myself away from me

I got bones beneath my skin, and mister...
There’s a skeleton in every man’s house
Beneath the dust and love and sweat that hangs on everybody
There’s a dead man trying to get out
Please help me stay awake, I’m falling...

Asleep in perfect blue buildings
Beside the green apple sea
Gonna get me a little oblivion, baby
Try to keep myself away from me

I can’t keep myself away from me
How am I gonna keep myself away from me

Grey Street - Dave Matthews Band

Grey Street - Dave Matthews Band

Oh look at how she listens
She says nothing of what she thinks
She just goes stumbling through her memories
Staring out onto Grey Street

She thinks, “Hey,
How did I come to this?
I dream myself a thousand times around the world,
But I can’t get out of this place”

There’s an emptiness inside her
And she’d do anything to fill it in
But all the colors mix together - to grey
And it breaks her heart

How she wishes it was different
She prays to God most every night
Though she swears it doesn’t listen
There’s still a hope in her "HE" might

She says, “I pray
Oh, but they fall on deaf ears,
Am I supposed to take it on myself
To get out of this place?”

Oh there’s a loneliness inside her
And she’d do anything to fill it in
And though it’s red blood bleeding from her now
It feels like cold blue ice in her heart
When all the colors mix together to grey
And it breaks her heart

There's a stranger speaks outside her door
Says take what you can from your dreams
Make them as real as anything
It’d take the work out of the courage

She says, “Please
There’s a crazy man that's creeping outside my door,
I live on the corner of Grey Street
and the end of the world”

There’s an emptyness inside her
And she’d do anything to fill it in
And though it’s red blood bleeding from her now
It's more like cold blue ice in her heart
She feels like kicking out all the windows
And setting fire to this life
She could change everything about her using colors bold and bright
But all the colors mix together to grey
And it breaks her heart
It breaks her heart
To grey

What Your Souls Sings - Massive Attack

This is more of a recovery song

Don't be afraid
Open your mouth and say
Say what your soul sings to you
Your mind can never change
Unless you ask it to
Lovingly re-arrange
The thoughts that make you blue
The things that bring you down
Only do harm to you
So make your choice joy
The joy belongs to you
And when you do
You'll find the one you love is you
You'll find you love you

Don't be ashamed
To open your heart and pray
Say what your soul sings
To you
So no longer pretend
That you can't feel it near
That tickle on your head
That tingle in your ear
Oh ask it anything
Because it loves you dear
It's your most precious king
If only you could hear
And when you do
You'll find the one you need is you
You'll find you love you

This one is call RUN !!
Maybe nutz wrote it for a friend
It's about things that comes with the territory.

So you thought it would be better after the fog lifted
I can see between the lines that you write
I know of the space you speak of
Are you just like me
I hear your cries in my sleep
Prisoner of love or rather fear
You been told you can't be love

You better RUN
You see but you can't belive
YOu still better RUN
you fear for you life
YOU still better F#@ken RUN

I woke up beaten and ashame today
my heart beat fading
I'm in the space you speak of
am I just like you
I cried in my sleep last night
I hear you call out my name
You been told a million times you can't be love

You better RUN!!!
you write these words but you can't see
You better RUN!!!
all your life
You still better F#@ken RUN !!!!!!

Hurt - Nine Inch Nails

This is a good one, but I prefer the Johnny Cash version better, it seems to take on a more somber tone when Johnny sings it.

Hurt - Trent Reznor
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that’s real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear my crown of s**t
On my liar’s chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stain of time
The feeling disappears
You are someone else
I am still right here
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

somewhere in one of the forums somebody listed a website, I hope I remember it correctly, sobermusicians.com
metallica master of puppets was mentioned and I just had to say that was my ultimate favorite song until my husband overdosed on cocaine seven months ago. I am glad a person listed the lyrics. I have listened to it, thinking I could never again but it helps remind me why he is where he is. Nobody mentioned my all time favorites newer bands:
SHINEDOWN- SAVE ME
CROSSFADE- COLORS
CROSSFADE- COLD- more of a song I feel for codependants to understand an addicts pain.
CINDER- LUSH
EVERCLEAR- HEROIN GIRL

If there are any rap fans out there, DMX "Slippin'" tells a story of his decent into addiction and subsequent rise to fame. I can't post the lyrics here, but if anyone is interested, give me a PM.

Kelly Clarkson - Addicted Lyrics

It's like you're a drug

It's like you're a demon I can't face down

It's like I'm stuck

It's like I'm running from you all the time

And I know I let you have all the power

It's like the only company I seek is misery all around

It's like you're a leech

Sucking the life from me

It's like I can't breathe

Without you inside of me

And I know I let you have all the power

And I realize I'm never gonna quit you over time

It's like I can't breathe

It's like I can't see anything

Nothing but you

I'm addicted to you

It's like I can't think

Without you interrupting me

In my thoughts

In my dreams

You've taken over me

It's like I'm not me

It's like I'm not me

It's like I'm lost

It's like I'm giving up slowly

It's like you're a ghost that's haunting me

Leave me alone

And I know these voices in my head

Are mine alone

And I know I'll never change my ways

If I don't give you up now

It's like I can't breathe

It's like I can't see anything

Nothing but you

I'm addicted to you

It's like I can't think

Without you interrupting me

In my thoughts

In my dreams

You've taken over me

It's like I'm not me

It's like I'm not me

I'm hooked on you

I need a fix

I can't take it

Just one more hit

I promise I can deal with it

I'll handle it, quit it

Just one more time

Then that's it

Just a little bit more to get me through this

I'm hooked on you

I need a fix

I can't take it

Just one more hit

I promise I can deal with it

I'll handle it, quit it

Just one more time

Then that's it

Just a little bit more to get me through this

It's like I can't breathe

It's like I can't see anything

Nothing but you

I'm addicted to you

It's like I can't think

Without you interrupting me

In my thoughts

In my dreams

You've taken over me

It's like I'm not me

It's like I'm not me

Hold On by Wilson Phillips

I know this pain
Why do lock yourself up in these chains?
No one can change your life except for you
Dont ever let anyone step all over you
Just open your heart and your mind
Is it really fair to feel this way inside?

Chorus:
Some day somebodys gonna make you want to
Turn around and say goodbye
Until then baby are you going to let them
Hold you down and make you cry
Dont you know?
Dont you know things can change
Thingsll go your way
If you hold on for one more day
Can you hold on for one more day
Thingsll go your way
Hold on for one more day

You could sustain
Or are you comfortable with the pain?
Youve got no one to blame for your unhappiness
You got yourself into your own mess
Lettin your worries pass you by
Dont you think its worth your time
To change your mind?

(chorus)

I know that there is pain
But you hold on for one more day and
Break free the chains
Yeah I know that there is pain
But you hold on for one more day and you
Break free, break from the chains

Some day somebodys gonna make you want to
Turn around and say goodbye
Until then baby are you going to let them
Hold you down and make you cry
Dont you know?
Dont you know things can change
Thingsll go your way
If you hold on for one more day yeah
If you hold on

Dont you know things can change
Thingsll go your way
If you hold on for one more day,
If you hold on
Can you hold on
Hold on baby
Wont you tell me now
Hold on for one more day cause
Its gonna go your way

Dont you know things can change
Thingsll go your way
If you hold on for one more day
Cant you change it this time

Make up your mind
Hold on
Hold on
Baby hold on

My favorites..

Jimmy Eat World

Pain

I don't feel the way I've ever felt.
I know.
I'm gonna smile and not get worried.
I try but it shows.

Anyone can make what I have built.
And better now
Anyone can find the same white pills.
It takes my pain away.

It's a lie. A kiss with opened eyes.
And she's not breathing back.
Anything but bother me.
(It takes my pain away)
Never mind these are horrid times.
Oh oh oh
I can't let it bother me.

I never thought I'd walk away from you.
I did.
But it's a false sense of accomplishment.
Every time I quit

Anyone can see my every flaw.
It isn't hard.
Anyone can say they're above this all.
It takes my pain away.

It's a lie. A kiss with opened eyes.
And she's not breathing back.
Anything but bother me.
(It takes my pain away)
Never mind these are horrid times.
Oh oh oh
I can't let it bother me.

I can't let it bother me.

It takes my pain away.

It's a lie. A kiss with opened eyes.
And she's not breathing back.
Anything but bother me.
(It takes my pain away)
Never mind these are horrid times.
Oh oh oh
I can't let it bother me

Takes my pain,
takes my pain,
takes my pain,
takes my pain away!

Also Jimmy Eat World

Drugs or me

Stay with me
You're the one that I need
You make the hardest things
Seem easy
Keep my heart
Somewhere drugs don't go
Were the sunshine slows
Always keep me close

If only you could see
the stranger next to me
you promise,
you promise that you're done
but I can't tell you from the drugs

Don't let go
we'll dig a great big hole
Down an endless hole,
We'll both go
You're so blind!
You can't save me this time
Hope comes from inside
And I feel so low tonight

If only you could see
the stranger next to me
you promise,
you promise that you're done
But I can't tell you from the drugs
I wish that you could see
This face in front of me
You're sorry, you swear it: you're done
But I can't tell you from the drugs

I need your hands to pull me up
(take me)
To pull me up
(so far)
Take the wheel out from me

If only you could see
the stranger next to me
you promise,
you promise that you're done
But I can't tell you from the drugs
I wish that you could see
This face in front of me
You're sorry, you swear it: you're done
But I can't tell you from the drugs

Keep my heart
somewhere drugs don't go
Where the sunshine slows
always keep me close

Three Days Grace

Its All Over

"It's All Over"

Your bottles' almost empty
You know this can't go on
Because of you my mind is always racing
The needles' breaking your skin
The scar is sinking in
And now your trip begins but
It's all over for
It's all over for

You
For you
When you're on the edge and falling off
It's all over for you
For you
When you're on the edge and falling off
It's all over

I know what runs through your blood
You do this all in vain
Because of you my mind is always racing
And it gets under my skin
To see you giving it
And now your trip begins but
It's all over for
It's all over for

You
For you
When you're on the edge and falling off
It's all over for you
For you
When you're on the edge and falling off
It's all over

And now you're dead inside
Still you wonder why
It's all over
And now you're dead inside
Still you wonder why
It's all over

And now you're dead inside
Still you wonder why
When you're on the edge and falling off
It's all over for (You, for you)
And now you're dead inside
Still you wonder why
When you're on the edge and falling off
It's all over for (You, for you)
And now you're dead inside
Still you wonder why
It's all over

Thank you so much for starting this thread! My partner is in rehab and I wanted to make a recovery cd for her - and here is the perfect thread!

I also wanted to mention that The Eagles' Hotel California is about a rehab center in California - the center where my partner is detoxing, btw.

Best,

Listening to the Keith Urban song Nobody Drinks Alone is a must. The lyrics posted above don't do it justice if you haven't heard it.

Beautiful Day

One of my favorites is Beautiful Day : By U2

The heart is a bloom
Shoots up from the stony ground
There's no room
No space to rent in this town

You're out of luck
And the reason that you had to care
The traffic is stuck
And you're not moving anywhere

You thought you'd found a friend
To take you out of this place
Someone you can lend a hand
In return for grace

It's a beautiful day
Sky falls, you feel like
It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away

You're on the road
But you've got no destination
You're in the mud
In the maze of her imagination

You love this town
Even if that doesn't ring true
You've been all over
And it's been all over you

It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
It's a beautiful day

Touch me
Take me to that other place
Teach me
I know I'm not a hopeless case

See the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
See the Bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light
And see the bird with the leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colors came out

It was a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
Beautiful day

Touch me
Take me to that other place
Reach me
I know I'm not a helpless case

What you don't have you don't need it now
What you don't know you can feel it somehow
What you don't have you don't need it now
Don't need it now
Was a beautiful day
