Brad Paisley has a new one out called "Alcohol". I think most normal people (non alcoholics) probably think he is praising alcohol use, but I'm an alcoholic so don't hear it that way...

I can make anybody pretty
I can make you believe any lie
I can make you pick a fight with somebody twice your size

Well I’ve been known to cause a few breakups
And I’ve been known to cause a few births
I can make you new friends
or get you fired from work

Chorus 1:

And since the day I left Milwaukee
Lynchburg and Bordeaux, France
Been making the bars lots of big money
and helping white people dance
I got you in trouble in high school
But college now that was a ball
You had some of the best times you’ll never remember with me
Alcoho-o-o-o-l, Alcoho-o-o-o-o-l

I got blamed at your wedding reception
For your best man’s embarrassing speech
And also for those naked pictures of you at the beach
I’ve influenced kings and world leaders
I helped Hemingway write like he did
And I’ll bet you a drink or two that I can make you
put that lampshade on your head

Chorus 2:
‘Cause since the day I left Milwaukee
Lynchburg and Bordeaux, France
Been making a fool out of folks just like you and helping white people dance
I am medicine and I am poison
I can help you up or make you fall
You had some of the best times you’ll never remember with me
Alcohol

Chorus 1

Wow - what a great thread! I was trying to put together a cd, so it is perfect timing. Here are a few I like tremendously:

"Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk" by Rufus Wainwright
"Bright Future In Sales" by Fountains of Wayne
"Are You Sure" by Willie Nelson

- and the song that makes ANYone smile:
"Keep On The Sunnyside" by The Peasall Sisters. Alot of people have done it, but their version sounds like little angels singing.

Recovery Song

I used this one for my treatment graduation:
Depeche Mode - Clean Lyrics

CleanThe cleanest I've been An end to the tears and the inbetween years And the troubles I've seen Now that I'm clean You know what I mean I've broken my fall Put an end to it all I've changed my routine Now I'm clean I don't understand What destiny's planned but I'm starting to grasp What is in my own hands I don't claim to know Where my holiness goes I just know that I like What is starting to show...Sometimes ...Clean ...As years go by All the feelings inside Twist and the turn As they ride with the tide I don't advise And I don't criticize I just know that I like With my own eyes...Sometimes...Clean...Sometimes

Bad

If you twist and turn away
If you tear yourself in two again
If I could, yes I would
If I could, I would
Let it go
Surrender
Dislocate

If I could throw this
Lifeless lifeline to the wind
Leave this heart of clay
See you walk, walk away
Into the night
And through the rain
Into the half-light
And through the flame

If I could through myself
Set your spirit free
I'd lead your heart away
See you break, break away
Into the light
And to the day

To let it go
And so to fade away
To let it go
And so fade away

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
Wide awake
I'm not sleeping
Oh, no, no, no

If you should ask then maybe they'd
Tell you what I would say
True colors fly in blue and black
Bruised silken sky and burning flag
Colors crash, collide in blood shot eyes

If I could, you know I would
If I could, I would
Let it go...

This desparation
Dislocation
Separation
Condemnation
Revelation
In temptation
Isolation
Desolation
Let it go

And so fade away
To let it go
And so fade away
To let it go
And so to fade away

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
Wide awake
I'm not sleeping
Oh, no, no, no

Like a needle needs a vein
Like a preacher need pain

Hawkmoon
================================================== ========

Something is about to give
I can feel it coming
I think I know what it means
I'm not afraid to die
I'm not afraid to live
And when I'm flat on my back
I hope to feel like I did

'cause hardness, it sets in
You need some protection
The thinner the skin

I want you to know
That you don't need me anymore
I want you to know
You don't need anyone, or anything at all

Who's to say where the wind will take you
Who's to say what it is will break you
I don't know, which way the wind will blow
Who's to know when the time has come around
Don't want to see you cry
I know that this is not goodbye

In summer I can taste the salt in the sea
There's a kite blowing out of control on a breeze
I wonder what's gonna happen to you
You wonder what has happened to me

I'm a man, I'm not a child
A man who sees
The shadow behind your eyes

Who's to say where the wind will take you
Who's to say what it is will break you
I don't know, where the wind will blow
Who's to know when the time has come around
I don't want to see you cry
I know that this is not goodbye

This ones actually about a "miracle drug" something that can mend the ills of the world.
Actually a drug song that is very positive

I want to trip inside your head
Spend the day there...
To hear the things you haven't said
And see what you might see

I want to hear you when you call
Do you feel anything at all?
I want to see your thoughts take shape
And walk right out

Freedom has a scent
Like the top of a new born baby's head

The songs are in your eyes
I see them when you smile
I've had enough I'm not giving up
On a miracle drug

Of science and the human heart
There is no limit
There is no failure here sweetheart
Just when you quit...

I am you and you are mine
Love makes nonsense of space
And time... will disappear
Love and logic keep us clear
Reason is on our side, love...

The songs are in your eyes
I see them when you smile
I've had enough of romantic love
I'd give it up, yeah, I'd give it up
For a miracle, a miracle drug, a miracle drug

God I need your help tonight

Beneath the noise
Below the din
I hear a voice
It's whispering
In science and in medicine
"I was a stranger
You took me in"

The songs are in your eyes
I see them when you smile
I've had enough of romantic love
I'd give it up, yeah, I'd give it up
For a miracle, miracle drug

Miracle, miracle drug

================================================== ==========
Stuck in a moment, can be applicable to addiction. Touted to have been written as a dedication to Michael Hutchence, post suicide, stuck in a moment.

I'm not afraid of anything in this world
There's nothing you can throw at me that I haven't already heard
I'm just trying to find a decent melody
A song that I can sing in my own company

I never thought you were a fool
But darling look at you
You gotta stand up straight, carry your own weight
These tears are going nowhere, baby

You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment and now you can't get out of it
Don't say that later will be better now you're stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it

I will not forsake, the colors that you bring
The nights you filled with fireworks
They left you with nothing
I am still enchanted by the light you brought to me
I listen through your ears, and through your eyes I can see

And you are such a fool
To worry like you do
I know it's tough, and you can never get enough
Of what you don't really need now...my oh my

You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment and you can't get out of it
Oh love, look at you now
You've got yourself stuck in a moment and you can't get out of it

I was unconscious, half asleep
The water is warm 'til you discover how deep...
I wasn't jumping...for me it was a fall
It's a long way down to nothing at all

You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment and you can't get out of it
Don't say that later will be better
Now you're stuck in a moment and you can't get out of it

And if the night runs over
And if the day won't last
And if our way should falter
Along the stony pass

And if the night runs over
And if the day won't last
And if your way should falter
Along this stony pass
It's just a moment
This time will pass

i just skimmed through, But "she talks to angels" the Black Crows is one of my theme songs. STEVIE NICKS in general has to be the artist that seems to literally speak directly to me through her songs in tons of different facets in my life down the oh so many roads i've traveled!among my favorites:'GOLD DUST WOMAN' ' GYPSY' &' DREAMS'(when the rain washes you clean you will know) as well as RASCAL FLATTS''im moving on' A L W A Y S moves me to tears. Thanx for the opportunity to share my *therapy music* titles. It helps almost as much as listening to them. I hope some of you get something positive out of @tleast 1 of these the next X you get the chance to hear!!

Ann Murray came out early 80's with song called " You Needed Me" Many claimed she wrote it for a friend in recovery. If not true, it could have been. I found the site with the words. Don't know how to transfer it so I'll post site.
Go to Ann Murray. Then scroll down to Ann Murray Songz. You needed me. Maybe one of you can move it here. I know you'll like it. Don W

"One day at a time" - The Eagles. It's basically Joe Walsh speaking of his alcoholism and finding his higher power. Great Song!

"Hang on to Your Life" The Guess Who

Thinkin' 'bout the people gone by
Screamin' that I don't wanna die
You can push your head
But don't you push it too far...

Thinkin' 'bout it's here and it's real
Wonderin' how I really should feel
You can sell your soul
But don't you sell it too cheap...

Hang on to your life
Hang on to your life

Thinkin' 'bout betrayin' a friend
Thinkin' 'bout delayin' the end
You can ride the wind
But don't you ride it too high

Hang on to your life....

(Spoken, from Psalm 22)
They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws;and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.

Dead Mans Rope

"Dead Man's Rope"…… Sting

A million footsteps, this left foot drags behind my right
But I keep walking, from daybreak 'til the falling night
And as days turn into weeks and years
And years turn into lifetimes
I just keep walking, like I've been walking for a thousand years

Walk away in emptiness, walk away in sorrow,
Walk away from yesterday, walk away tomorrow,

If you're walking to escape, to escape from your affliction
You'd be walking in a great circle, a circle of addiction
Did you ever wonder what you'd been carrying since the world was black?
You see yourself in a looking glass with a tombstone on your back

Walk away in emptiness, walk away in sorrow,
Walk away from yesterday, walk away tomorrow,
Walk away in anger, walk away in pain
Walk away from life itself, walk into the rain

All this wandering has led me to this place
Inside the well of my memory, sweet rain of forgiveness
I'm just hanging here in space

Now I'm suspended between my darkest fears and dearest hope
Yes I've been walking, now I'm hanging from a dead man's rope
With Hell below me, and Heaven in the sky above
I've been walking, I've been walking away from Jesus' love

Walk away in emptiness, walk away in sorrow,
Walk away from yesterday, walk away tomorrow,
Walk away in anger, walk away in pain
Walk away from life itself, walk into the rain

All this wandering has led me to this place
Inside the well of my memory, sweet rain of forgiveness
I'm just hanging here in space

The shadows fall
Around my bed
When the hand of an angel,
The hand of an angel is reaching down above my head

All this wandering has led me to this place
Inside the well of my memory, sweet rain of forgiveness
Now I'm walking in his grace
I'm walking in his footsteps
Walking in his footsteps,
Walking in his footsteps

All the days of my life I will walk with you
All the days of my life I will talk with you
All the days of my life I will share with you
All the days of my life I will bear with you

Walk away from emptiness, walk away from sorrow,
Walk away from yesterday, walk away tomorrow,
Walk away from anger, walk away from pain
Walk away from anguish, walk into the rain.

There are so many where would I begin ? Everyone likes John Lennon but everyone usually miss "Watching the Wheels". Indigo Girls... all through their albums from "Prince of Darkness", "Hammer and a Nail", "Reunion".. too many to even think of just from them. Five for Fighting "Superman"... and on and on... and then there is Jewel and her album "Spirit"... and what is probably my all time favorite recovery tune...

Life Uncommon

Don't worry mother, it'll be all right
And don't worry sister, say your prayers and sleep tight
It'll be fine lover of mine
It'll be just fine
Lend your voices only to sounds of freedom
No longer lend your strength to that which you wish to be free from
Fill your lives with love and bravery
And you shall lead a life uncommon
I've heard your anguish, I've heard your hearts cry out
We are tired, we are weary, but we aren't worn out
Set down your chains, until only faith remains
Set down your chains
And lend your voices only to sounds of freedom
No longer lend your strength to that
Which you wish to be free from
Fill your lives with love and bravery
And we shall lead a life uncommon
There are plenty of people who pray for peace
But if praying were enough it would have come to be
Let your words enslave no one and the heavens will hush themselves
To hear our voices ring out clear
With sounds of freedom
Sounds of freedom
Come on you unbelievers, move out of the way
There is a new army coming and we are armed with faith
To live, we must give
To live
And lend our voices only to sounds of freedom
No longer lend our strength to that we wish to be free from
Fill your lives with love and bravery
And we shall lead...
Lend our voices only to sounds of freedom
No longer lend our strength to that which we wish to be free from
Fill your lives with love and bravery
And we shall lead a life uncommon

Whelp, didn't see this one. Video's pretty powerful, too.

Scars ~ Papa Roach

I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut
My weakness is that I care too much
And my scars remind me that the past is real
I tear my heart open just to fail

Drunk and I'm feeling down
And I just wanna be alone
I'm pissed cause you came around
Why don't you just go home
Cause you channel all your pain
And I can't help you fix yourself
You're making me insane
All I can say is

[Chorus:]

I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut
My weakness is that I care too much
And our scars remind us that the past is real
I tear my heart open just to fail

I tried to help you once
Against my own advice
I saw you going down
But you never realized
That you're drowning in the water
So I offered you my hand
Compassion's in my nature
Tonight is our last stand

[Chorus]

I'm drunk and I'm feeling down
And I just wanna be alone
You shouldn't ever come around
Why don't you just go home?
Cause you're drowning in the water
And I tried to grab your hand
And I left my heart open
But you didn't understand
But you didn't understand
Go fix yourself

I can't help you fix yourself
But at least I can say I tried
I'm sorry but I gotta move on with my own life
I can't help you fix yourself
But at least I can say I tried
I'm sorry but I gotta move on with my own life
