Re: Songs about addiction and recovery (post your recommendations!)

I love a variety of music and often I hear a different message in the lyrics then the one that was intended. I guess it is because I look at things from a lot of differnt viewable angles. When I first found out about J using and he first got into recovery there were a couple of songs I heard that I liked and related to. I don't know if yo will like them but thought I would post them.

This one reminded me of his choice and journey towards being clean.

MELISSA ETHERIDGE LYRICS

"Heal Me"

Ain't it crazy
For a moment there
This felt just like dying
But now I see that something inside
Is coming alive
Ain't it crazy

No use running from a revolution
I just surrender to this evolution

Heal me lift me
Take me to the other side
Amazing grace
Has touched my face
And the sweet sound doesn't lie

Ain't it crazy
For a moment there
I just gave up trying
But now I see
You can let the light in
You can begin again
Ain't it crazy
I lay me down in this sweet perfection
I am a witness to my resurrection

Heal me lift me
Take me to the waterside
Drop me in let me swim
Let everyone know
I'll be coming home again

Make no mistake
I'm wide-awake
Ain't it crazy

Heal me lift me
Take me to the other side
I'll take what I've earned
These lessons I've learned
I'm ready for the ride
Heal me lift me
Take me and my soul will fly
My battered heart will make a new start
Let everyone know
I'll be coming home again
Heal me lift me
Take me to the waterside
Drop me in
Come on and watch me swim
Let everyone know
I'll be coming home again

This one I love but it also has bittersweet memories because it reminds me of his stuggle with his DOC and his relationship with me. It reminded me of how meth came into his life and took a hold of it, how he would think it was just a "thing" and he could get past it but that it took an unexpected hold on him, and when he was still using he felt that if he stopped he would loose and if he told me he would loose....it just reminded me of what a stong hold it can have on someone even when they don't want it to.

Artist Lyrics: Etheridge Melissa
Song Lyrics: The Weakness in Me
Album Lyrics:
Also by Joan Armstrong

(Joan Armatrading)
I'm not the sort of person
Who falls in and quickly out of love
But to you I gave my affection
Right from the start
I have a lover who loves me
How could I break such a heart
Yet still you get my attention
CHORUS:
Why do you come here
When you know I've got troubles enough
Why do you call me
When you know I can't answer the phone
You make me lie when I don't want to
And you make someone else some kind of an unknowing fool
And you make me stay when I should not
Are you so strong or is all the weakness in me
Why do you come here
And pretend to be just passing by
But I mean to see you
And I mean to hold you
Tightly
Feeling guilty worried
Waking from tormented sleep
Oh this old love has me bound
But the new love cuts deep
If I choose now I'll lose out
Oh one of you has to fall
And I need you and you
CHORUS

Re: Songs about addiction and recovery (post your recommendations!)

I'm just going to put some songs that made me think... in case there is another metalhead around....

this songs are from my favorite band megadeth

"Addicted To Chaos"

Only yesterday they told me you were gone
All these normal people, will I find another one?
Monkey on my back, Aching my bones
I forgot you said "One day you'll walk alone"
I said I need you, does that make me wrong?
Am I a weak man, are you feeling strong?
My heart was blackened, It's bloody red
A hole in my heart, a hole in my head?

Who will help me up?
Where's the helping hand?
Will you turn on me?
Is this my final stand?

In a dream I cannot see
Tangled abstract fallacy
Random turmoil builds in me
I'm addicted to chaos

Lights shined on my path,
Turn bad days into good
Turn breakdowns into blocks, I smashed 'em
Cause I could
My brain was Labored, My head would spin
Don't let me down, don't give up, don't give in
The rain comes down, cold wind blows
The plans we made are back up on the road
Turn up my collar, welcome the unknown
Remember that you said
"One day you'll walk alone"

also

I like this songs alot... all of them megadeth

-I thought I knew it all.
-Use The Man
-in my darkest hour

*JAZZ/FUSION*

I must mention that I also find very very pleasant JACO PASTORIUS music, which is my favorite bass player of all times... and also an ex-addict for he did not made it... which is sad...

so try weather report or jaco solo albums but this guy was really something special...
my favortite album is

Weather Report - heavy weather
jaco pastorious - word of mouth

I thought I would add this one, since I heard it tonight when I was out and about.
It reminds me of the common journey that we all share.

The Traveller
The Alan Parsons Project

The traveller is always leaving town
He never has the time to turn around
And if the road he's taken isn't leading anywhere
He seems to be completely unaware

The traveller is always leaving home
The only kind of life he's ever known
When every moment seems to be
A race against the time
There's always one more mountain left to climb

Days are numbers
Watch the stars
We can only see so far
Someday, you'll know where you are
Remember
Days are numbers
Count the stars
We can only go so far
One day, you'll know where you are

The traveller awaits the morning tide
He doesn't know what's on the other side
But something deep inside of him
Keeps telling him to go
He hasn't found a reason to say no

The traveller is only passing through
He cannot understand your point of view
Abandoning reality, unsure of what he'll find
The traveller in me is close behind

Days are numbers
Watch the stars
We can only see so far
Someday, you'll know where you are
Remember
Days are numbers
Count the stars
We can only go so far
One day, you'll know where you are

George Harrison

Precious words drift away from their meaning
And the sun melts the chill from our lives
Helping us all to remember what we came here for
This is love, this is la la la-la love
This is love, this is la la la-la love

Little things that will change you forever
May appear from way out of the blue
Making fools of ev'rybody who don't understand
This is love, this is la la la-la love
This is love, this is la la la-la love

This is love, this is love
This is love, this is la la la-la love

Since our problems have been our own creation
They also can be overcome
When we use the power provided free to everyone
This is love, this is la la la-la love
This is love, this is la la la-la love

This is love, this is la la la-la love
This is love, this is la la la-la love

Re: Songs about addiction and recovery (post your recommendations!)

MARGARITAVILLE Jimmy Buffett
Nibblin' on sponge cake,
watchin' the sun bake;
All of those tourists covered with oil.
Strummin' my six string on my front porch swing.
Smell those shrimp--
They're beginnin' to boil.
Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
But I know it's nobody's fault.

Don't know the reason,
Stayed here all season
With nothing to show but this brand new tattoo.
But it's a real beauty,
A Mexican cutie, how it got here
I haven't a clue.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
Now I think,-- hell it could be my fault.

I blew out my flip flop,
Stepped on a pop top;
Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home.
But there's booze in the blender,
And soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
But I know, it's my own damn fault.
Yes, and some people claim that there's a woman to blame, And I know it's my own damn fault

Wisdom grows as the song plays on....

TUBTHUMPING
Chumbawamba

We'll be singing
When we're winning
We'll be singing

I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down

Pissing the night away

He drinks a whisky drink
He drinks a vodka drink
He drinks a lager drink
He drinks a cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him of the better times:

"Oh Danny Boy, Danny boy..."

I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down

Pissing the night away

He drinks a whisky drink
He drinks a vodka drink
He drinks a lager drink
He drinks a cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him of the better times:

"Don't cry for me next door neighbor..."

I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're nevre going to keep me down

We'll be singing
When we're winning
We'll be singing

When I first heard this song it brought back a memory... 1/4 mile from home. 5-6 beers in me that used me as the middle man long enough. Needed to walk down the main street to get home. About 5 PM so everyone was out and on the way home. No trees to run behind on the main street *LOL* 1/4 mile to go. Thought I was dieing. When I tried to hurry my pace, I would hurt all the more. Finally I am at the door. Struggle to fit the key in the door. Ohh no I am on the 3rd floor was my thought. Every step was pain. I made it and thus comes the words found in that song... pissin the night away...pissin the night away
Not sure if the energy drain from being the middle man for a 6 pack or the walk home with the need to stop being the middle man... Next I remember was waking up after 12 noon the next day. Such lessons don't sink in till years later. No more playing the middle man for me. Open a bottle today and I would bypass me...dump it straight in the flusher No More Middle Man for me *LOL* :band

Jane's Addiction -- I'm not an Addict (the active addict's theme song)

Fiona Apple's album "When the Pawn" is a good example of the inner workings of an addictive personality, and in addition, many of the songs are about addictions (love addictions, dark obssessions and ghosts of the past, anorexia (which IS an addiction), drugs)

Courtney Love -- Sunset Strip (also another theme song of the active addict)

Re: Songs about addiction and recovery (post your recommendations!)

I just had to throw this in too - having a 6yr old daughter and listening to disney music, this song has brought on a whole new meaning since I sobered up. LOL

The Bare Necessities

Look for the bare necessities
The simple bare necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife
I mean the bare necessities
Old Mother Nature's recipes
That brings the bare necessities of life

Wherever I wander, wherever I roam
I couldn't be fonder of my big home
The bees are buzzin' in the tree
To make some honey just for me
When you look under the rocks and plants
And take a glance at the fancy ants
Then maybe try a few

The bare necessities of life will come to you
They'll come to you!

Look for the bare necessities
The simple bare necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife
I mean the bare necessities
That's why a bear can rest at ease
With just the bare necessities of life

Now when you pick a pawpaw
Or a prickly pear
And you ***** a raw paw
Next time beware
Don't pick the prickly pear by the paw
When you pick a pear
Try to use the claw
But you don't need to use the claw
When you pick a pear of the big pawpaw
Have I given you a clue ?

The bare necessities of life will come to you
They'll come to you!

So just try and relax, yeah cool it
Fall apart in my backyard
'Cause let me tell you something little britches
If you act like that bee acts, uh uh
You're working too hard

And don't spend your time lookin' around
For something you want that can't be found
When you find out you can live without it
And go along not thinkin' about it
I'll tell you something true

The bare necessities of life will come to you

The problem with some of those songs though ..... those are the ones I used to listen to in college when the drug use was way fun.... LOVE Pink Floyd. But smoked a lot of pot while listening.

Don't some of those songs bring good memories? I find it dangerous to have good memories about using. Makes me think I can go back...

I don't have a problem cept for the tear jerking country music. Living in a rural area, that's all they played on the jukebox around the bars.

Listen to Kenny G , David Sanborn or George Benson. There's a lot of good jazz to listen to that'll lift your spirits w/o reminding any one of drinking and drugging

"Waiting around to die"
by Townes Van Zandt

Sometimes I don't know where
this dirty road is taking me
sometimes I can't even see the reason why
I guess I keep a-gamblin'
lots of booze and lots of ramblin'
it's easier than just waitin' around to die

One time, friends, I had a ma
I even had a pa
he beat her with a belt once 'cause she cried
She told him to take care of me
headed down to Tennessee
it's easier than just waitin' around to die

I came of age and I found a girl
in a Tuscaloosa bar
She cleaned me out and hit in on the sly
I tried to kill the pain, bought some wine
and hopped a train
seemed easier than just waitin' around to die

A friend said he knew
where some easy money was
we robbed a man, and brother did we fly
the posse caught up with me
and drug me back to Muskogee
it's two long years I've been waitin' around to die

Now I'm out of prison
I got me a friend at last
he don't drink or steal or cheat or lie
His name's Codine
he's the nicest thing I've seen
together we're gonna wait around and die
together we're gonna wait around and die

I didn’t see this posted, but then maybe I can’t read (which wouldn’t surprise me at this point.) ~ Kelly
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

That’s Why I’m Here
Kenny Chesney

No I ain’t had nothing to drink
I knew that’s probably what you’d think
If I dropped by this time of night
Remember way back when
I promised you I’d drop in
At one of those meetings down at the Y

Well, they started talkin’ bout steps you take
Mistakes you make
The hearts you break
And the price you pay
I almost walked away

You could hear a pin drop
When this old man
Stood up and said I’m gonna’ say it again
Like I do every week
For those who don’t know me

It’s the simple things in life
Like the kids at home and a loving wife
That you miss the most, when you lose control
And everything you love starts to disappear
The devil takes your hand and says no fear
Have another shot, just one more beer
Yah, I’ve been there, that’s why I’m here

This ole boy stood up in the aisle
Said he’d been living a life of denial
And he cried as he talked about wasted years
I couldn’t believe what I heard
It was my life word for word
And all of the sudden it was clear

It’s the simple things in life
Like the kids at home and a loving wife
That you miss the most, when you lose control
And everything you love starts to disappear
The devil takes your hand and says no fear
Have another shot, just one more beer
Yah, I’ve been there, that’s why I’m here

I know for us it may be too late
But it would mean the world to me
If you were there when I stand to say
It’s the simple things in life
Like the kids at home and a loving wife
That you miss the most, when you lose control
And everything you love starts to disappear
The devil takes your hand and says no fear
Have another shot, just one more beer
Yah, I’ve been there, that’s why I’m here
Oh, I’ve been there, that’s why I’m here
