I'll chime in on my experience with what's considered to be two the most highly addictive drugs.

The root cause of my cocaine use was ignorance. I thought I was indestructible at the dumb young age of 21. The root cause of my cocaine addiction was continued abuse. Once my brain needed the cocaine to maintain normal levels of dopamine that was all she wrote. Cocaine and the Brain: The Neurobiology of Addiction | Serendip's Exchange

The root cause of my nicotine use was ignorance. I thought I was indestructible at the dumb young age of 16. The root cause of my nicotine addiction was continued abuse. Once the nicotine got my brain hooked that was all she wrote. Nicotine Addiction - Nicotine and Dopamine

I've been coke free for 24 yrs and nicotine free for 1.5 yrs.

I understand lots of people abuse (fill in the blank) for lots of different reasons. We are a self medicating culture, been that way since our ancestors stumbled onto the first wacky root.

I found this article to be interesting...

How We Get Addicted - TIME

Growing up in a small town , books and movies were my escape.
I wanted to emulate those shiny charming women.

They were independent..they smoked...they drank...Wow!
My female family members did not work or smoke or drink..

Root Cause? Ignorantly yearning to live in a fantasy world.
I was shocked when I slid into alcoholism years later...

For me, there was the pain (suffering) of shame long before addiction. When I found that drugs and alcohol covered up the shame and allowed me to forget my childhood, if only for a brief time, I used as often as I could.

If I had been "comfortable in my own skin" all of the time I would have needed a mood altering substance in the first place.

Great stuff here. Lots to ponder. I believe mine was due to ignorance as well. I love all the deep thoughts.

There were times where i just drank out of feeling trapped or in pain, but the last time I sunk into a deep alcohol pool it seemed to merely be out of boredom which is horrible. I just started to think everything was more fun with alcohol. Anyone drink out of pure boredom?
