Family Member Meth Addict

I'm a long time al-anon member and this past weekend traveled out of State for a graduation for my niece. Her father is my husband's brother. We knew he and his wife have struggled with Meth addiction for many years. They seem normal some of the time, then boom. This weekend was disastrous. I won't bore you with the details but to watch them not show up, talking incoherently, flipping his partial dental plate teeth in and out of his mouth....I've lost my piece of mind. It haunts me. The hovel that they live in...it's awful.

I'm assuming Meth is like every other addiction and recovery is the same but I don't know. Just for today, I'm seeking your wisdom to help me find my peace of mind again. My heart breaks for them, and the pain my husband is in to see it. Is Meth addiction any different than alcoholism?

Hi MsGrace

I don;t have much first hand experience of meth but from the point of view of watching a few friends fall to it, I think addiction is addiction - the same loss of self respect, letting go of responsibilities,m changes of character, obsession with scoring and using...the same kinds of things I went through as an alcoholic and pothead I saw them go through too - or so it seemed to me.

I am the mother of a meth addict and I think it is different than other drugs. My adult daughter was addicted to opioid before meth. With the opioid the withdrawal was the worst. Yes her seeking behaviour was bad, lying stealing etc. But with meth the psychosis is horrible she has delusions ,hallucinations. Even when she stopped meth for awhile, due to hospitalization, the delusions lasts for months.
