Doctor Prescribed Or Abuse Of Meds?
My drug of choice is alcohol and I have been sober for a few weeks now. However, I take 2mg of Klonopin a day for severe anxiety. I recently went cold turkey off of it and had a nightmare withdrawal. I couldn't refill my prescription because I had taken "a few" extra during the month. I find Klonopin to be great "hangover helpers". I asked my doctor to switch me to Ativan or Valium & he had the nerve to say no. Can I consider myself clean & sober if I take the
Klonopin as prescribed? I have been on it for nearly 6 months now & realize that I am physically addicted. Thanks everyone.

I would say you answer your own question there
first you don't take it "as prescribed"
second you ask your doctor for more/other drugs
third you admit to being addicted to Klonopin
That's three things that say you aren't "sober"
I have known "sober alcoholics" that took Klonopin as prescribed for anxiety

Hey Tib
Please do your research on benzo's. As far as i am concerned that stuff is crap. My guess is you are already very physically addicted to them, its how they are designed by big pharma. So if you decide to get off of them you need to do a long tapering with drawl.
Check out my experience here from improper taper(cold turkey) http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...ml#post2187499
anxiety work book Managing Anxiety Disorders | Here to Help, A BC Information Resource for Individuals and Families Managing Mental Health or Substance Use Problems
After a year of sobriety and hard work i was anxiety and depression free....and no meds. Was on meds for 10 years.
Take care.
Disclaimer: dont take my advise i know nothing, talk to docter

I'm in no position to determine if your condition requires a higher dose or more potent drug, it might and I would be a fool to sit here and tell you you're wrong in that regard, but people with recorded "mental illness" are treated more strigently as a general rule in the United States as it regards controlled substances, that's simply the reality of it.
