From my treasures...

If Only We Believe

To believe is to know that every day
is a new beginning.
It is to trust that miracles happen,
and dreams really do come true.
To believe is to see angels
dancing among the clouds
To know the wonder of a stardust sky
and the wisdom of the man in the moon.

To believe is to know the value of a nurturing heart,
The innocence of a child's eyes
and the beauty of an aging hand,
for it is through their teachings we learn to love.
To believe is to find the strength
and courage that lies within us.
When it is time to pick up
the pieces and begin again.

To believe is to know we are not alone,
That life is a gift and this is our time to cherish it.
To believe is to know
that wonderful surprises
are just waiting to happen,
And all our hopes and dreams are within reach.
"If only we believe"!

It was the wind that gave them life.
It is the wind that comes out of our mouths now
that gives us life.
When this ceases to blow we die.
In the skin at the tips of our fingers
we see the trail of the wind;
it shows us the wind blew
when our ancestors were created.

As a part of nature's wondrous cycle
Of new birth, growth, fruitfulness and death
We rejoice in the creation of new life,
For parenthood, the passing on of knowledge,
For understanding and the wisdom of years.
We are grateful for those who have gone before
Passing on to us our spiritual heritage.
May our lives blossom as the apple tree in Spring
May we become fruitful in thought and deed
And may the seed of love that falls to the ground
Linger beyond our time on this earth.

~Faith and Worship

A Winter Blessing

Blessed are you, winter, dark season of waiting,
you affirm the dark seasons of our lives,
forecasting the weather of waiting in hope.

Blessed are you, winter, you faithfully guard a life unseen,
calling those who listen deeply
to discover winter rest.

Blessed are you, winter, frozen and cold on the outside,
within your silent, nurturing womb you warmly welcome
all that longs for renewal.

Blessed are you, winter, your bleak, barren trees
preach wordless sermons
about emptiness and solitude.

Blessed are you, winter, you teach us valuable lesson about waiting
in darkness with hope and trust.

Blessed are you, winter, season of blood red sunsets and star-filled,
long, dark nights, faithfully you pour out your beauty.

Blessed are you, winter, when your tiny snowflakes flurry through the air,
You awaken our sleeping souls.

Blessed are you, winter, with your wild and varied moods,
So intent on being yourself, you refuse to be a people-pleaser.

Blessed are you, winter, when ice storms crush our hearts and homes,
You call forth the good in us as we rush to help one another.

Blessed are you, winter, your inconsistent moods often challenge
Spring’s arrival, yet how gracefully you step aside when her time has come.

I'm grateful that I've learned to appreciate winter for the qualities mentioned in the poem above. I've begun to look forward to the season of "emptiness and solitude" for the peace and calm to be found there.

And the part about people rushing to help each other? It makes me think back to a time probably 25 years ago when there was a big snowstorm. I was working as a bike messenger then, and as I was making my way back to the office at the end of the day, I saw a long line of cars westbound on Michigan Avenue, where I knew there was a steep uphill at about 7th Street. As I got closer, I saw a group of people at the foot of the hill. As a car would approach the hill, the people would walk to the car and have a brief conversation w/the driver. Then the driver would start up the hill and the group of people stepped in behind and alongside the car, pushing until it was certain that the car would clear the hill. They'd hurry back down the hill and repeat the procedure w/the next car.

When I got closer, I yelled to the group "good work, dudes!" It turned out it was a bunch of college kids who went to school in the area. One of them had been watching out his dorm window, saw the problem, and rounded up all his friends to go out and lend a hand.

It was cool. One of those things that helps you keep your faith in people, for sure.

ETA: I had a mountain bike w/knobby tires, so I was OK in the snow. For the hill, I just picked it up and hiked--much easier than getting a car up!

Thank you for such a powerful prayer about winter Ann and thank you Honeypig for making me think about winter in a new light, it's never been my favourite season but after reading your post I feel I can appreciate it a little more than I did. The photo is amazing, thanks for sharing it. xx

Wonderful prayer and thoughts. We've just had our first snow of the season - these posts will help change my perspective.
