I want to be one of those people who step up and do whatever's needed.
I loved that post, HP.

The Wild Geese

Horseback on Sunday morning,
harvest over, we taste persimmon
and wild grape, sharp sweet
of summer's end. In time's maze
over fall fields, we name names
that went west from here, names
that rest on graves. We open
a persimmon seed to find the tree
that stands in promise,
pale, in the seed's marrow.
Geese appear high over us,
pass, and the sky closes. Abandon,
as in love or sleep, holds
them to their way, clear,
in the ancient faith: what we need
is here. And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye
clear. What we need is here.

~ Wendell Berry

Woods

I part the out thrusting branches
and come in beneath
the blessed and the blessing trees.
Though I am silent
there is singing around me.
Though I am dark
there is vision around me.
Though I am heavy
there is flight around me.

~ Wendell Berry

Beautiful, HP. Through your readings and pictures, I have become more tree aware and I take more time now to just stand in a forest and close my eyes and listen...and smell...and say "thank you" for the beauty.

one time, I entered heaven

it was a quiet morn
when the world slept deeply
and the spirits swirled like water

imagine
skipping on clouds
leaping from star to star

it was the music, you see
it was the notes the angels
had carefully fastened to the breeze

sometimes
I gather them like stardust
sometimes
in between the greed and cry of the wolf
when the moon pauses

when the earth catches its awesome breath
I can hear the bells peal
and see the face of God
mirrored in the dips and dives of a dove

sometimes
when I listen

as the angels embrace
the crystal dewy dawn.

Breakage

I go down to the edge of the sea.
How everything shines in the morning light!
The cusp of the whelk,
the broken cupboard of the clam,
the opened, blue mussels,
moon snails, pale pink and barnacle scarred—
and nothing at all whole or shut, but tattered, split,
dropped by the gulls onto the gray rocks and all the moisture gone.
It’s like a schoolhouse
of little words,
thousands of words.
First you figure out what each one means by itself,
the jingle, the periwinkle, the scallop
full of moonlight.

Then you begin, slowly, to read the whole story.

~ Mary Oliver

This poem made me think of those photos you posted, Ann--the seashell beaches.

Caught in the doldrums of August we may have regretted the departing summer, having sighed over the vanished strawberries and all that they signified. Now, however, we look forward almost eagerly to winter's approach. We forget the fogs, the slush, the sore throats and the price of coal, we think only of long evenings by lamplight, of the books which we are really going to read this time, of the bright shop windows and the keen edge of the early frosts.

― Denis Mackail

Sowing the seed,
my hand is one with the earth.

Wanting the seed to grow,
my mind is one with the light.

Hoeing the crop,
my hands are one with the rain.

Having cared for the plants,
my mind is one with the air.

Hungry and trusting,
my mind is one with the earth.

Eating the fruit,
my body is one with the earth.

Just catching up after vaca - you've outdone yourself, HP. The perfect words & pictures for the changeover from summer to autumn.

Let us shine!

I ask for a moment's indulgence to sit by thy side.
The works that I have in hand
I will finish afterwards.

Away from the sight of thy face
my heart knows no rest nor respite,
and my work becomes an endless toil
in a shoreless sea of toil.

Today the summer has come at my window
with its sighs and murmurs;
and the bees are plying their minstrelsy
at the court of the flowering grove.

Now it is time to sit quiet,
face to face with thee,
and to sing dedication of life
in this silent and overflowing leisure.

~ Rabindranath Tagore

I love all that you post, HP, especially the transition into autumn and the apples, I do love fresh apples off the tree.

The shells remind me of Florida too, and spending hours just looking at the pretty shells. Here are some I took pics of as well, much like the ones above. So pink and pretty and once alive in the sea.

This has nothing at all to do with anything but made me laugh way more than seemed reasonable, so I wanted to share it here:
