I looked up the Blanding's turtle, Ann, and it lives throughout Wisconsin in addition to much of Canada. I'll have to keep my eyes open to see if any of the turtles crossing the road ('tis the season for that here) might look like one.

This talk of turtles reminded me of a turtle incident that happened on the day XAH and I were returning from the courthouse, having filed the papers to change the legal separation to a divorce:

As we were almost home from the courthouse, we saw some guys trying to move a big snapping turtle out of the 4-lane highway we were on. AH and I pulled over and wrapped the snapper up in a big blanket that was in my car and took him across the road to the pond there. It took some doing to get him out of the blanket and pointed the right way, but he made his way to the water, slowly submerged, still facing us, and bobbed a few times, putting just his weird little nostrils above the water. Then he turned to face the pond and swam gently off, long neck extended, legs w/long-clawed feet paddling, gradually disappearing into the tea-colored water. I want to remember exactly how he looked; I found it calming and somehow reassuring.

If anyone wants to read more on this, the turtle part starts at post #72. There is some interesting input from other members on what finding the turtle may have meant, and some cool links to sites that talk about the "medicine" of various animals. https://www.soberrecovery.com/forums...ml#post5434349 (So, I guess this is it...)

To a Box Turtle

Size of a small skull, and like a skull segmented,
of pentagons healed and varnished to form a dome,
you almost went unnoticed in the meadow,
among its tall grasses and serrated strawberry leaves
your mottle of amber and umber effective camouflage.

You were making your way through grave distances,
your forefeet just barely extended and as dainty as dried
coelacanth fins, as miniature sea-fans, your black nails
decadent like a Chinese empress’s, and your head
a triangular snake-head, eyes ringed with dull gold.

I pick you up. Your imperious head withdraws.
Your bottom plate, hinged once, presents a No
with its courteous waxed surface, a marquetry
of inlaid squares, fine-grained and tinted
tobacco-brown and the yellow of a pipe smoker’s teeth.

What are you thinking, thus sealed inside yourself?
My hand must have a smell, a killer’s warmth.
It holds you upside down, aloft, undignified,
your leathery person amazed in the floating dark.
How much pure fear can your wrinkled brain contain?

I put you down. Your tentative, stalk-bending walk
resumes. The manifold jewel of you melts into grass.
Power mowers have been cruel to your race, and creatures
less ornate and unlikely have long gone extinct;
but nature’s tumults pool to form a giant peace.

~ John Updike

Oh how I love that today, HP. What a lovely turtle that is. Last night Bubba and I took a dusk drive to see what may be about and heading down a country road through the swamp area...there was a turtle in the middle of the road. I must look up what kind it was, it was rather plain and shiny back and it took both hands to lift it and carry it to the other side and it wasn't as heavy as a snapping turtle or the Blanding's turtle I moved a week or so back.

We have turtle crossing signs and I guess it's true, this area has all the right conditions for turtles to love living here.

One more on the turtle theme:

Playa Grande Beach

As though the weight of a thousand generations
had been laid across its back,
the black form rose between the waves,
pulling itself onto midnight sand.

In the absence of light
the Costa Rican heavens fell upon the shore,
illuminating the leatherback sea turtle
in her quest up the beach.

The ancient creature turned, eyes to her home,
and with laborious, alternating strokes,
dug her back flippers into the ground, cupping the sand,
and hurling it in a shower to either side.

Then, 3 feet later, the digging stopped and I
crawled forward, sand clinging to my palms and knees,
a wet, spherical egg dropped
into the womb of the earth.

I watched as every chance at life
was given up to the earth by the mother;
88 chances for their race to survive.
88 prayers in the face of extinction.

Nest completed,
I touched her soft shell
as she crawled back to the ocean
her path ingrained in my mind.

~ Michael H. J. Rodin

Exquisite, HP. The sea turtles are perhaps the loveliest of all. On several beaches in Florida, they turn all lights out in May so the turtles can lay eggs without distraction.

Oh how I have enjoyed this turtle theme, thank you for making my day.

I was looking back at my Florida pics and found this one from about 5 years ago. My best friend was visiting and we were both out photographing the area and we found this big soft shelled turtle in the middle of the road. I had to test lift a couple of times, it was very very heavy and we got laughing so hard that I almost dropped it. I lifted him to the hill by a pond, where he was heading, and first he sat quietly head in his shell, then he looked out and ran to the pond, while we hollered "RUN FORREST RUN". After that, every turtle or tortoise we saw became "Forrest".

The spirit is so near that you can't see it!
But reach for it... don't be a jar full of water whose rim is always dry. Don't be the rider who gallops all night and never sees the horse that is beneath him.

~ Rumi

I really liked the image of the rider who gallops all night, never seeing the horse that carries him. I'm being borne up, carried along, lifted and moved, in ways that I could never do for myself--let me acknowledge and show gratitude to the Spirit that does this for me.

On mountains, by rivers, in valleys,
in hidden recesses, there grow the plants, trees, and herbs ;
trees, both great and small,
the shoots of the ripening grain,
grape vine and sugar-cane.

Fertilized are these by the rain
And abundantly enriched.
The dry ground is soaked.
Herbs and trees flourish together
from the one water which issued from the clouds.
Plants, trees, thickets, forests,
according to need receive moisture.

All the various trees, lofty, medium, low,
each according to its size,
grow and develop roots, stalks, branches, leaves,
blossoms and fruits in their brilliant colors wherever the one rain reaches.

All become fresh and glossy,
according as their bodies, forms and natures are great or small.
So the enriching rain,
though it is one and the same,
yet makes each of them flourish.

~ The Lotus Sutra

I’ve known rivers:
I’ve known rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow of human blood in human veins.

My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.
I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.
I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.
I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleans, and I’ve seen its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset.

I’ve known rivers:
Ancient, dusky rivers.

My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

Let the reeds pander to the wayward wind,
I am the mountain range
That determines the course of the wind.

Let the sea weed flatter the inconstant tide,
I am the moon
That controls the tides ebb and flow.

Let the magnet succumb to the unbending north and south,
I am the great earth:
Only I have directions.

Oh, my, I just stumbled across this and it's just amazing! If you have a half hour to spend, it's worth the watch, IMHO. No talking, just meditative music and lovely cinematography.

HP, I love the reading today, the mountains, the moon, the earth...they all are much wiser and more powerful than us and that is fine with me. Let them lead, let them show us nature's way, the way that is supposed to be followed.

I peeked at Kelp Forest and will be back to relax and just enjoy it. It looks lovely.
