I hope it's been a good birthday, HP. You're a treasure.

Fireflies - I don't see many here. Yet there's a lake across the street & they like standing water.

How lovely, Bim. I could look at that water all day.

One of my younger sisters was an elementary school teacher (I say "was" b/c she died 10 years ago at the age of 37 of breast cancer). She worked in the schools in the "bad parts" of Milwaukee. One of the things she did w/her kids every spring was to have them put seeds (usually something big, like a bean) in between wet paper towels so they could look each day and watch them gradually sprout. Once they had sprouted, they'd plant them into milk cartons and then eventually outside.

She did this b/c virtually every kid she encountered in her teaching career had no clue about dirt, plants, farms, growing things. One kid actually thought milk came from "a factory."

Did that little exercise in growing something change anyone's life? Who knows--but she had an opportunity to open a window, even if only a crack, and so she did.

And then again, maybe one of those kids will turn out like this local:

I am sad you lost your sister, HP, she was so young. I'm sure many of her students learned wonderful things from her, things that go far beyond any classroom. And they will remember her, indeed they will embrace the memory and maybe do something good because of her example.

Yes - I'm sure she had an impact on them. I remember every special teacher I ever had - they're in my heart forever.

Are we not wasps who spend all day in a fruitless attempt to traverse a window-pane - while the other half of the window is wide open?

I had just finished scrubbing and refilling my birdbath yesterday afternoon when I noticed a wasp had come to drink. I have seen all sorts of birds and mammals drink from it, of course, but I never think about the insects needing to drink too. It was a cool thing to see.

There is something about me that attracts wasps, they sneak up on me and sting me when I don't even know they are there. There can be 100 people and one wasp...and it will head straight for me and not go away.

I'm not sure why, perhaps I need to put up a bird bath.

Last summer there was a nest of ground-dwelling wasps in my front yard. I found this out by running over it w/the lawnmower. Luckily I only got stung twice, but that's probably b/c I set a new world land speed record once I realized what was happening! I had to go back out at night, when I had read that the wasps should be sleeping, and stealthily retrieve the mower from where I had left it. The grass was allowed to grow in that part of the lawn for the remainder of the summer. Wasp stings are not all that fun, and you have my sympathy for your wasp-attractant character!

...and they just keep stinging, the little brats.

I had one fly up the back of my tee shirt a couple weeks ago. I was carrying a backpack and in the time it took for me to realize what was happening and to get out of the backpack, it stung me four times. Owie. Welts!

Oh, YIKES, bim, that sounds terribly painful! And then, on me at least, once the pain finally goes, the damn ITCHING sets in, almost as bad as the hurting part!

I do love the sentiment about, "aren't we all like wasps," though! So true. Path of least resistance is so much better.

I swell big time when stung, once I was stung at the back of my arm at the top where it is tender and it swelled up like a baseball. I don't take on breathing problems but it wouldn't hurt for me to carry a kit just in case.

Bim, if a wasp got up my shirt I would strip nekkid and run like a crazy person and not care what I looked like.

They talk about big skies in the western United States, and they may indeed have them, but you have never seen such lofty clouds, such towering anvils, as in Iowa in July.

― Bill Bryson, "The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid"

Me too - they're the cause of many a great daydream.

Bill Bryson - One of my favorites. 'A Walk in the Woods' was hilarious - and many others.

I read "A Walk in the Woods" and parts of it almost caused me to be incontinent! It was a scream, I agree.
