It was very timely for me too, Ann. I spent some time on the phone this AM talking to my brother, who is beginning to realize that some of his coping mechanisms, learned as a child growing up w/our abusive stepfather, are perhaps not serving him so well as an adult (he's 55!) Perfectionism, intolerance for mistakes, an overwhelming need to be right--as a human dealing with other humans, we need to get past those things.

Like the quote from which Brene Brown took the title of her book "Daring Greatly":
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.

I love her writings too, Maggie and am so glad when something I post touches someone who needs to hear it. As I randomly post each day, it seems that what "I" need to read comes forward in my search too, and makes this a great way to begin my day.

HP, your quote from Daring Bravely is one I love too. I believe that one should have a passion for life and daring to try new things, daring to stand for right and principles even when you stand alone, daring to keep trying when all else fails...and daring to try a new path when the old path abruptly changes. These make life wonderful and challenging and worth every ounce of effort we have.

Thank you both for sharing, it touches my heart.

Each morning the birds begin a chorus outside my window, first one and then another and then a symphony of songs...it never fails to lift my spirits as I begin my day.

One of the things I miss in the fall and winter is the singing of the birds. It just lifts my heart when I start to hear them in the spring again!
