Earth Prayers

I'd like to start a new "daily reader" thread here. The book I'm going to use is called "Earth Prayers From Around the World: 365 Prayers, Poems and Invocations for Honoring the Earth", edited by Elizabeth Roberts and Elias Amidon.

I first picked up a copy of this book in the mid 1990s and it got me through some tough times. Over the years, I lost it, gave it away, who knows--it was gone from me. I recently purchased another copy and would like to share the readings from it, one day at a time.

The first section is called "The Ecological Self."

This reading is from the book "Earth Prayers From Around the World", edited by Elizabeth Roberts and Elias Amidon, copyright 1991.

We are Nature, long have we been absent, but now we return,
We become plants, trunks, foliage, roots, bark,
We are bedded in the ground, we are rocks,
We are oaks, we grow in the openings side by side,
We browse, we are two among the wild herds spontaneous as
any,
We are two fishes swimming in the sea together,
We are what locust blossoms are, we drop scent around lanes
mornings and evenings,
We are also the coarse smut of beasts, vegetables, minerals,
We are two predatory hawks, we soar above and look down,
We are two resplendent suns, we it is who balance ourselves orbic
and stellar, we are as two comets,
We prowl fang'd and four-footed in the woods, we spring on
prey,
We are two clouds forenoons and afternoons driving overhead,
We are seas mingling, we are two of those cheerful waves rolling
over each other and interwetting each other,
We are what the atmosphere is, transparent, receptive, pervious,
impervious,
We are snow, rain, cold, darkness, we are each product and
influence of the globe,
We have circled and circled till we have arrived home again, we
two,
We have voided all but freedom and all but our own joy.

- Walt Whitman

Honey, I love this reading and that you will post daily. Nature has been my "go to" place to find peace, to find stability and to make sense of a crazy time. When I walk in nature I feel healed and the sounds of the birds and feel of the breeze wrap me in a blanket of spirituality that I find no other place.

Thank you, and hugs.

I feel the same way about Nature, Ann. I am never so lifted up as I am when I see a flight of sandhill cranes silhouetted against the sunrise or so comforted as I am when I see the first tiny green sprouts of spring after the hard cold of winter.

One of my intentions for the new year is to honor and admire the natural world around me, and this is one of the ways I can do that.

honey, i was just down by the beach last night,

it always has magical powers to me

my early sobriety was spent reading down at the beach,

on what i now call my serenity slab

I agree that there's magic in water, RZ, be it the ocean, lakes, rivers, ponds, creeks, or the rainwater collected in the hollow of a mushroom out in the woods.

This reading is from the book "Earth Prayers From Around the World", edited by Elizabeth Roberts and Elias Amidon, copyright 1991.

The mountains, I become part of it...
The herbs, the fir tree, I become part of it.
The morning mists, the clouds, the gathering waters,
I become part of it.
The wilderness, the dew drops, the pollen...
I become part of it.

I am the one whose praise echoes on high.
I adorn all the earth.
I am the breeze that nurtures all things green.
I encourage blossoms to flourish with ripening fruits.
I am led by the Spirit to feed the purest streams.
I am the rain coming from the dew
that causes the grasses
to laugh with the joy of life.
I am the yearning for good.

This reading is from the book "Earth Prayers From Around the World", edited by Elizabeth Roberts and Elias Amidon, copyright 1991.

It is lovely indeed, it is lovely indeed.

I, I am the spirit within the earth.
The feet of the earth are my feet;
The legs of the earth are my legs.
The strength of the earth is my strength;
The thoughts of the earth are my thoughts;
The voice of the earth is my voice.
The feather of the earth is my feather;
All that belongs to the earth belongs to me;
All that surrounds the earth surrounds me.
I, I am the sacred works of the earth.
It is lovely indeed, it is lovely indeed.

This is actually not from "Earth Prayers" but I stumbled across it and liked it, so here it is:

Sleeping in the Forest

I thought the earth remembered me,
she took me back so tenderly,
arranging her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds.
I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed,
nothing between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths
among the branches of the perfect trees.
All night I heard the small kingdoms
breathing around me, the insects,
and the birds who do their work in the darkness.
All night I rose and fell, as if in water,
grappling with a luminous doom. By morning
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better.

from "Sleeping In The Forest" by Mary Oliver

This describes perfectly the instant connection I feel of my spirit to nature, the moment I step into a forest or stand on country hills or look out over waters...nature remembers me and wraps me in her beauty and peace.

Thank you, HP.

This reading is from the book "Earth Prayers From Around the World", edited by Elizabeth Roberts and Elias Amidon, copyright 1991.

Sometimes, when a bird cries out,
Or the wind sweeps through a tree,
Or a dog howls in a far off farm,
I hold still and listen a long time.

My soul turns and goes back to the place
Where, a thousand forgotten years ago,
The bird and the blowing wind
Were like me, and were my brothers.

My soul turns into a tree,
And an animal, and a cloud bank.
Then changed and odd it comes home
And asks me questions. What should I reply?

-- Herman Hesse

This reading is from the book "Earth Prayers From Around the World", edited by Elizabeth Roberts and Elias Amidon, copyright 1991.

The Delight Song of Tsoai-talee

I am a feather on the bright sky
I am the blue horse that runs in the plain
I am the fish that rolls, shining, in the water
I am the shadow that follows a child
I am the evening light, the lustre of meadows
I am an eagle playing with the wind
I am a cluster of bright beads
I am the farthest star
I am the cold of dawn
I am the roaring of the rain
I am the glitter on the crust of the snow
I am the long track of the moon in a lake
I am a flame of four colors
I am a deer standing away in the dusk
I am a field of sumac and the pomme blanche
I am an angle of geese in the winter sky
I am the hunger of a young wolf
I am the whole dream of these things

You see, I am alive, I am alive
I stand in good relation to the earth
I stand in good relation to the gods
I stand in good relation to all that is beautiful
I stand in good relation to the daughter of Tsen-tainte
You see, I am alive, I am alive

-- N. Scott Momaday

I'm the mad cosmic
Stones plants mountains
Greet me Bee rats
Lions and Eagles
Stars twilights dawns
Rivers and jungles all ask me
Whats new How you doing?
And while stars and waves have something to say
It's through my mouth they'll say it.
