Waiting

Sometimes we find ourselves in Life's waiting room.
What was is gone.
What will be is not yet cresting on
Our inner or outer horizon.
If we know in our bones that clarity will come
When the time is right,
The wait can be delicious rest,
A slow motion meander of long slow inhales
Of exhales filled with full-body smiles
And deep-heart-acceptance.

~ Oriah Mountain Dreamer

I found this on Oriah Mountain Dreamer's web site about 2 years ago, just about the time XAH and I were divorcing. I printed it out and taped it to the side of the bookshelf that faced my spinning wheel and chair. I've moved things around since then and kind of forgot about it. As I took everything out of that room yesterday afternoon, getting ready to paint, I found the poem again and thought it might go well here.

Interesting how the Universe/Higher Power/God/etc. has us leave these reminders for ourselves...

How lovely, HP, stumbling upon our "treasures" under new conditions brings new light and hindsight to the meaning, I suspect this brought you great comfort at a time when you needed it most.

The sunrise over the lake in your picture reminds me of our place in the north when each morning I would wake and look out my window and see a similar beautiful sky. It told be that all is well and the world was still a beautiful place.

Life's waiting room - we know it well, don't we? I'll be printing that out & taping it somewhere too, HP. Thank you so much.

Song of the Builders

On a summer morning
I sat down
on a hillside
to think about God -

a worthy pastime.
Near me, I saw
a single cricket;
it was moving the grains of the hillside

this way and that way.
How great was its energy,
how humble its effort.
Let us hope

it will always be like this,
each of us going on
in our inexplicable ways
building the universe.

Ode to a Lemon

Out of lemon flowers
loosed
on the moonlight, love's
lashed and insatiable
essences,
sodden with fragrance,
the lemon tree's yellow
emerges,
the lemons
move down
from the tree's planetarium

Delicate merchandise!
The harbors are big with it-
bazaars
for the light and the
barbarous gold.
We open
the halves
of a miracle,
and a clotting of acids
brims
into the starry
divisions:
creation's
original juices,
irreducible, changeless,
alive:
so the freshness lives on
in a lemon,
in the sweet-smelling house of the rind,
the proportions, arcane and acerb.

Cutting the lemon
the knife
leaves a little cathedral:
alcoves unguessed by the eye
that open acidulous glass
to the light; topazes
riding the droplets,
altars,
aromatic facades.

So, while the hand
holds the cut of the lemon,
half a world
on a trencher,
the gold of the universe
wells
to your touch:
a cup yellow
with miracles,
a breast and a nipple
perfuming the earth;
a flashing made fruitage,
the diminutive fire of a planet.

~ Pablo Neruda

I can smell the lemon, and my mouth puckers and waters while I read this poem!

Flags

In the wind the flags, which here are called irises,
Snap and blow ragged all along the street.
They are of three colors, yellow and white and blue.
At this I am pleased as a man who sees strange ships,
For the reason that in the country I recall
We had not heard of any but white flags.

There the white flags grew in a damp level place
Where jonquils were, and daffodils and lilacs,
And small cool roses; and hands of locust blossoms,
And heavy-headed peonies, and a red flower
The women called red-hot poker, loud as a bull-rag.
These flowers growing together in tall strong grass.

Sometimes the swallows flying; sometimes rain
Came over the tall grass, and the small red rose
(Its flowers as yet watched for) shed off the dust.
Sometimes it was windy, and the flags blew out;
Or hot, and the jonquils under the lilac bush
Built out in beauty like a clear warm river.

My pleasant thoughts build in colors and graceful shadows
For this flower-garden: flags the color of far waters,
White locust flowers in the rain, young flowers in the grass.
Play up a tune, sing loud and handsome, O soul!
The garden abides, it is not like love, nor the song
Where some lost girl brings honey in the horn.

The Locust Tree in Flower (First Version)

Among
the leaves
bright

green
of wrist-thick
tree

and old
stiff broken
branch

ferncool
swaying
loosely strung-

come May
again
white blossom

clusters
hide
to spill

their sweets
almost
unnoticed

down
and quickly
fall

Pieces of sun on the lake of my spirits;
Pieces of sun on waters of eagle and hawk;
Pieces of sun lie broken on the waters of the lake
from which come the voice to all my singing, the eyes to all my beauty,
the peace to all my longing.
Above all is the long-living spirit which is the thread from generation to generation,
as long as the land we live on is everlasting and our children have a place to lie down.
all as it was, love, all as it was, beauty, all as it was, order, all as it was, in exactly the right place.
This place of the sun trail.
The buffalo-grass plain.
The hummingbird spring.
The grass hat.
The frog mesa.
And the big house on the lake where the good spirits live.
This place of my people
This place of my grandsons still unborn.
All as it was, peace.
Everything good is to be found here.
Everything good is to be kept here.

Open the door,
liberate the blue sky;
let the inquisitive flower-scents
enter my room;
the light of the early sun,
let it flood my body
from vein to vein;
I am alive, the word of greeting
thatís throbbing
in every twig and leaf,
let me hear it;
this dayspring dawn,
let it swathe my heart and mind
with its scarf as it does the field
green with the shoots
of new grass.
The love I have known in my life
utters its silent language
in the sky, in the air,
everywhere.
I am bathed in the light
of its pure enthronement.
All thatís real I see
as a necklace of jewels
on the breast of blue.

~ Rabindrinath Tagore

There is no difference between
healing your body and healing the Earth
or helping another to heal.
It is all the same Body.

There is no difference between
healing Earthís body and healing your own
or helping another to heal.
We are all the One Body.

Begin anywhere.
Begin with one tree,
or a bird.
Begin with your own heart
or skin, clean out your liver,
clear your mind.
Begin with the growth of a child,
your familyís food.
Then continue to include
one small part of the time.
You will be healing the Whole.

~ Alla Renee Bozarth

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain.
I like watching the puddles gather rain.

And a vocabulary word for today, too:
Pluviophile: a lover of rain; someone who finds joy and peace of mind during rainy days.
