gp tomorrow, please advise

greetings, all!
I am going to see my gp tomorrow.
I had been sober for years, starting picking up this summer, but hey, guess what, I'm still an addict and here, six months later, of course things are out of my control.
I will get sober, my appt with the doc is to establish a medical course of action to help with withdrawal so I do not try the easy route when things get bad.
may need medical detox. but I've done inpatient, outpatient, rehab, jail. I would like some advice on the words i should use to talk to my doctor tomorrow so they just don't throw these later choices at me. i can do it, i just need to get clean

The only thing I can advise is honesty. I know that drs are often reluctant to give benzos to a detoxing alcoholic for home detox because they fear the addict will drink while using them, and potentially overdose. Do you have a spouse or family member that can go with you and be the responsible party for administering the meds? That can help.

Good luck and don't be afraid to go to the ER if the dr doesn't prescribe home detox.

I am not just very good at talking under stress, especially about personal problems.
but after reading posts from here for over a year, I feel like I can ask you folks.
I am willing to be truthful to my gp.

I am willing to be truthful to my gp.

One method to break through the minimization and/or internal denial in the moment is to write down a bullet list of facts beforehand to give to the gp.

Good luck!

made a bullet point list. it was not even looked at by the doc.
left with a script for sequel, which, as I understand it, is an anti-psychotic and some literature about local psychiatry groups. I already take anti-psychotics, as I expressed to the gp, the nurse, and on my bullet list! I said more than once, "I just need some help with withdrawal symptoms. like a month or so. I have a person who lives with me that can administer them as needed if you are worried about that"
they obviously did not trust me, given my history and abuse.
I understand that.
so, I guess it's just me and advil.

Sorry things didn't go well with the doctor. I' get the same thing from my psychiatrist.
Best of luck to you. You can make it through without picking up.
I had to do it, too.
Just remember it'll pass and you'll never have to feel this way again.

Really sorry it didn't go the way you hoped. Doctor's in the UK barely ever provide benzos for home detox. I totally get why but I've been through the desperation where I've wanted to stop drinking so badly but couldn't hack the withdrawal and knew how unsafe it was without medication. My doctor advised me to taper down and contact a support group. They put me on a waiting list..

In the end I stopped myself but there was a time when that seemed impossible. I hate how hard it is to get help here in the UK.

Hi Elisa, sorry it didn’t go as planned. Sounds like you were prepared and the doctor didn’t listen .
Perhaps a second opinion? If not, if your withdrawals get bad, perhaps an ER visit? Not sure what stage you are at. If you are uncomfortable, without serious withdrawals, just know this will pass. Keep telling yourself that. Is there something you can do to distract yourself? What will be different this time for long term sobriety? Have you tried therapy? What about spiritual practices like meditation, yoga? These, in addiction to intense exercise, really have helped me.

thank you for all your kind responses.
I have been to cbt and thro every other thing you could throw money at.
there is alot for me at stake. I will get clean on my own. like I mentioned, I was clean for years, until I made a mistake last summer. then my av kicked up and I started daily use again.
what will I do differently? never pick up again.
if it gets truly bad, I will go to the er.

so, I went and picked up the pills today.
been reading about seroquel, and it doesn't look that great, but I'll follow the doctor's instructions.

You can do it, take little steps, a minute, an hour believe in yourself. You beat it before, now just do it again!
