The OP asked for something controversial we could discuss. Having a discussion is just that, a discussion. It's not AV.

Fair enough, the fact of our discussion isn't AV, the subject matter of the question is , no ?

I intended the question to be about whether we act on reason alone when we form a view on things or make choices, or do other factors such as feelings or intuition play an important part. That's not AV, not to me anyway.

my interpretation of the question was whether rational people were more or less likely to disagree on subjective truths. whilst that could be asked of AV, hence perhaps illustrating a scenario, I don't think it's about AV in general, no.

Had AlericB asked which style of 'football' is best , then the idea of objectivity could come into play when it was determined American football is the superior sport.

But the question revolved around, or at least I took it as, how does one determine which of the 'methods' of recovery is best. I was trying to point out that abstinence isn't a 'method ' and the idea that one can't just start 'practicing' it without following a structured program to instill and maintain some set of required skills or practices that somehow imbue the follower with abilities to remain abstinent that were not present in the individual prior to the adherence of said method , is AV.
AVRT is quitting, quitting is AVRT, anyone who ever quit 'uses' AVRT, they have a Big Plan, with or without the nomenclature.

I would consider that to be entirely subjective. Unless that was intended as a joke, in which case they're all clearly as bad as each other & cricket is a much superior sport

the original question didn't mention recovery at all.

I love the way in cricket that the batsman, the receiver of aggressive bowling, is always applauded more than the bowler!

I usually assume the applause is for me but then reality kicks in, in the annoying way it does, and I realise it's for the batsman! It's the batsman who walks off to applause when defeated and not the bowler who had his no. of rounds no matter how badly he does.

So no invective around the merits of existentialism in the context of recovery?

I'm sure you realise that 'out for a duck" means being bowled out without scoring any runs. Existentialist or not, you're out! Cricket doesn't like existentialists.

And AV is uncomfortable around the idea of permanent, unconditional abstinence.

Well expressed. It's as binary as being bowled out.

I think it was about sport. I take it you're a football fan: Albert Camus was goalkeeper for his university's side in Algeria.
