Puzzle

To carry on from awuls critical reasoning thread, here is a puzzle for the weekend. This is less a problem of critical reasoning and more just a riddle. Many of you may have heard this before, so if you have, please refrain from divulging the answer for 24 hours, when I'll post the answer. But I suspect someone will solve it before that. Here goes:

A detective shows up at a secluded old house out in the desert. Inside he finds a dead man and also 53 bicycles. What happened?

You may ask yes/no questions. Good luck.

Never heard of this before, but I'm pretty sure I know the answer.

No idea. In for the entertainment.

Also, Carlotta will want to know why he was alone and no one had gone looking for the man.

It's not my riddle and I don't know the answer for sure, but if he did then I am wrong and have to go back to the drawing board. Awaiting an answer.

OK here is my theory:

The man was the leader of a doomsday cult which believed that gas and electrical powered transportation were the work of the devil and that horses were evil. Him and his 52 disciples went on a desert retreat riding their bicycles (the only approved mode of transportation).
After serving them the infamous Kool Aid, he gave them a proper burial then stood at the altar, said his prayers and drank the last cup.
